Why hasn't my female platy gotten pregnant? I have been reading that platies mate like crazy and will almost definitely get pregnant. I have a male and female platy in my tank, I've had them for about 6 months and they both reached sexual maturity about 2 months ago. They are in a 10 gallon tank with 2 white skirt tetras, and 4 tiny neon tetras, the tank does not seem to be overcrowded. I keep the temperature around 78 degrees and I have a filter. There are fake corals and thick plants in the tank. Both platies are healthy and very active. So, my question is, should I expect a pregnancy, i.e., is it a definite thing, or is it possible that the platies will never mate?

Thank you.

Although it is possible that you have a sterile platy, it's more likely that she's just overly stressed. If you want to breed them, you need to have at least 3, preferably 4 females to 1 male. For her health, you need at least 2 females to 1 male. With only 1 female to 1 male, he's going to be constantly after her to mate and giving her no peace. This is not conductive to a healthy fish. And if the fish is not healthy, it is not as likely to produce fry. I have a feeling the problem is not that they aren't mating but that they are mating too much. Get her a female companion to take off some of the stress. No guarantees, but you will probably find they both end up with fry that way.

Male platies are worse than male guppies. The %. one female and it particularly is a on no account ending chase. the female stresses out so undesirable. I advance platies and that i've got 4 females in with my male and he keeps to be busy and the girls can do their factor. That keeps all of them chuffed. you may get a breeding internet cage for her in case you do not have yet another small tank and placed loads of vegetation, pretend are fantastic, so that they could disguise. They do consume their toddlers, so after she is finished, placed her back in her tank.

If you notice the male paying lots of attention to the female, and the female has not gotten pregnant yet, then she probably not interested in him or she cannot mate. If you want babies, then you should probably get a different female. However, it could be the other way around. Maybe you should get a different male. Just remember, the preferred ratio of males to females is 1:3, so you should not have more males than females. Good luck!

there are several things that could have happened

your platy was pregnant and aborted the babies because it was stressed out

your male is chasing her to much, so she is to stressed to pregnant and have a normal pregnancy (ideally you have to have 1 male & 2-3 females)

You had fry in your tank, but they were eaten by the other fish

Your ammonia levels are off chart, they need to be at 0

Hope that helps
Good luck

hi.
it could be that your female platy don't like your male platy, or it could be that the other fish that you have in the tank with the platy have eating your fry for a long time
