If you could select a current player or a player back in time, who would you select? Take all elements of the game into account, defensive skills, OBP, slugging %, AVG., etc.

Although he wasn't the nicest guy, I'd have to go with Rogers Hornsby.

His numbers are amazing - .358/.434/.577, which puts him 2nd, 8th and 13th in those respective categories. His 301 homers doesn't sound all that impressive today, but he led the league twice and was in the top ten consistently. Rajah also played for six years in the deadball era, so those power numbers were held down.

If you're going to argue against Hornsby, it would probably be because of his defense. He was a smooth fielder, but apparently didn't have the range of a guy like Joe Morgan and was prone to errors.

The only other playesr I can see making a case for are Joe Morgan, Eddie Collins, and possibly Nap Lajoie. Still, I'd stick with Hornsby.

Bill James says Joe Morgan. Morgan was a better fielder, faster runner, stole more bases, was better in the clubhouse, and his teams did better in the standings.

Hornsby hit better, relative to the league, and had more power.

The deciding factor for me is that, every team Hornsby played on seemed to want to get rid of him after a year or so, while Morgan was usually in demand.

Cincinnati wouldn't have had the Big Red Machine without Joe Morgan.
