Career avg. 262, 324 home runs, 292 hits,1225 RBIs and 39 stolen bases. He was barley an average player and he IS the WORST player in the Hall of Fame!!

Oh, Carter isn't nearly the least player in the Hall.

Position matters, and Carter was a catcher. He was the premier catcher in the game for most of his career. That doesn't proclaim Hall-worthiness in large, friendly letters, but it does measure up, just enough.

He was pretty popular when I was growing up. In his day I guess he was a impressive offensive catcher. I don't know about his defense...it must be stellar! There have many guys better than him that haven't got in (Ron Santo) . I'm sure he had more than 292 hit considering he had 324 home runs. lol

He was one of the best all-round catchers of all time. People just don't appreciate what a catcher has to go through to get life time offensive stats that compare well with outfielders. If you compared him with 100 other catchers at random, he'd be in the top 3. Don't let numbers dazzle you. His are GREAT for a catcher. (And he could field, too, and call a game.)

Bill Mazeroski being in the Hall of Fame is more of a disgrace than Gary Carter.

Probably because he was the best catcher of his era. And he had a fan and media friendly face.

Of course if he's in, then where's Jack Morris, Ron Santo and Lee Smith? They also were among the best of their era at their postion.

Compare him to other Catchers; I think you will find that he was one of the best ever.

If they just went by stats without considering positioning, there would be nobody but OFs and 1Bs.

by being the best all-around catcher in baseball for about a 12 year stretch.

you see, Pete Rose was banned for betting on baseball with a 3rd party, but Carter bet with the commissioner, then played like crap and intentionally lost his money to him.

Actually I've never heard of Carter and the stats you list do sound pretty pathetic for a Hall of Famer
