It years past, the date of registration was important as that started the clock on period of protection. publication without a proper display of symbol, author and date made the copyright invalid.

If the material was created or published after about 1984, the term of copyright is based solely on the life of the author making both the copyright notice symbol and the publication date inconsequential. It remains a custom to use the symbol and date to help researchers find the registration materials at the Library of Congress, which still files by date.

It should have a date because copyright, like a patent, is only good for a specific period of time.
