It depends wholly on the situation. Suicide is not always due to mental illness - one may commit suicide because they do not wish to reach the point of complete paralysis through physical illness such as Motor Neuron Disease or Multiple Sclerosis. In this case it is neither courage nor cowardness, it is a choice; in the sense that we would put a dog 'out of its misery' these people are being put out of their misery from an incurable disease. Then there are those who choose to kill themselves because they cannot cope mentally with the world although they are physically able. In this case I must say that it is cowardly because it is a much harder task to remain living on this earth and complete your journey than it is to leave. I truly believe that you make a choice how to deal with things / look at the world, and I believe that choosing to take your own life regardless of the implications for those you leave behind is no more than an easy and cowardly way out. We may be constrained by society but the majority of people have free will in their minds.

I don't think it's the act of a coward but the act of a person who is really confused and lonely. It's absolutely stunning to find out that someone you have known for years commits suicide. It's the type of thing that ruins families and causes so much pain not only to the one who has committed the act but to those of us who are left behind to pick up the pieces of a shattered life.
Life isn't fair or easy, but it can truly be a beautiful thing. We lose sight of that at times when our troubles get us down, but it's something us frail human beings need to always remember.
The life we live isn't our own, it's part of a bigger and grander picture. It's our job to live every second of our life to the fullest...no matter what troubles come our way.

No , I think suicide is a result of unbearably depressing circumstances and I feel it should be treated as any serious health matter . I believe religion has mistakenly stigmatized a serious depressive disorder as something worthy of going to hell for . I think that is the root cause of the cowardness theory in my opinion . I believe an all knowing entity will or would recognize the difference ultimately between cowardice and illness.

An act of cowardness, NO. An act of stupidity YES. Put a gun to your head sometime and think about pulling the trigger. That takes guts. BUT IDIOTIC YES. Someone that does that is not in his/her right mind.

I know it is a desperate last act, most people that "try" are asking for help mostly, some want attention, I don't really know about "Cowardness" because this world is to full of fear and fear is what they are afraid of, I have see a lot of your questions and I know you think, not many people do.

I think it's more an act of sheer desperation. I had an aunt who committed suicide and I know that it was desperation on her part. I could never, no matter how bad things can get. I need to know the end of the story.

I try not to judge...I've been depressed by events in my life before, and if I had felt like that for a long time, and didn't think it would get better, then I can't imagine not commintting suicide. Luckily there's medication for depression now, so now when I hear of a suicide, my reaction is "what a waste".

No way. That same person that took their life, could be an unknown hero. They could of dived into a shark tank to save a friend. Something triggered the response for them to do what they did, however small or weird it seemed. My BEST friend commited suicide over a girl friend, and he was the braviest guy I'd ever known. He couldn't accept the fact that she was still connected to her ex. I still miss him. Always.

No i don' think it is at all, my nephews dad done it just over a year ago by hanging himself and although it left my sister in bits as they shared shared a child together (they were separated by the way but friends still)
My sister did think he was acting a little odd but she did not foresee that.
I remember a lively and outgoing man,but you can't always know what is going on in someones mind and i am SURE he did it in desperation and was no coward xxx

I think one must first look at the mental state of the person.. it could be cowardness, desperation, or too many demonds to deal with or stress...
when I think it is cowardness is when they have to take a bunch of people with them before they either kill themselves or the police do it for them......
