I'll be in Vegas for five days next month and hoped to visit the Grand Canyon while I'm in the general vicinity. I'd prefer to rent a car instead of taking a guided tour (for the sake of time and money). So, I wondered what the best route and place along the Canyon would be to get us there and back to Vegas before sundown.

Driving is the best way to go. I have done that. Its a good 5 hour drive each way on a mostly two lane road, but a good road, with campers and trucks. To get there just go East from the Strip to Boulder Highway, RT-93 and turn right going south. That route will take you past boulder city and Hoover Dam and just continue on it until you get to I-40. At I-40 turn left headed East to Williams/Flagstaff, Az. Its about an hour to Williams on I-40. Then turn left again going north on RT-89 toward the Canyon (about an hour from there).

If you leave Vegas about 7:00 Am you should be at the Canyon about noon and if you stay there until about 4:00 or 5:00 PM you should be back in Vegas before midnight.

If you need to be back in Vegas before dark leave the Canyon by about 3:00 or 4:00 PM. When you get to the canyon you must park your car and take the free West-rim drive shuttle. It will take you along that drive and you can get off whenever you want and the buses run about ever 15 minutes so you can stay at a stop a short time then reboard the bus.

Since the Grand Canyon is so far, if you have the money, I recommend getting a tour by plane and bus. You get picked up at your hotel to bring you to the airport, fly over the canyon and when you arrive you are taken by bus to the canyon. You can choose to have your own free time, or stay on the bus tour. I recommend the free time on your own. You can then stay overnight, or return the same night by plane. Check out www.scenicairlies.com and also www.destinationcoupons.com for coupons. I have done this tour twice and it is worth the money!

that is an allllllllll day trip...you have to leave bright and early and you wont get back until late at night. Really i took a guided bus tour...you have to drive for hours and hours through the mohave desert and there arent alot of places to stop at so if you have car trouble you're out of luck...plus it's safer in a large group...either way you're going to be veryyy hot and the altitude up there is crazy and you might get a bit dizzy...plus on the way there you have to go up mountains and swurve around and around and drive super carefully because you're going wayyy up high...the grand canyon is huge and hey with the guided tour bus you dont have to pay extra to get into the canyon but if you take your own car remember they charge admission to get in which is odd because it's nature and no one really owns it. LOL they need to make more places to eat around there though.

tinkertoy explained it perfect how to get there.
oK - I was just in your shoes...... went for 5 days (last week) and my plan the whole time was to go to the grand canyon - we rented a car ..when the time came..we changed our mind --- we went to hoover dam when we were there.... (thats like 20 minutes)....btw.if you go there.park on the Arizona side - its free parking...(and its right by the NV side)...and we went to body exhibition - louie anderson- and all the normal things to do and see in vegas..we were so busy- we changed our minds and didnt' want to waste a whole day just driving....when there is so much more to see and do in vegas..
lets see if that happens to you : )
