I have caught and handled many Eastern Box Turtles in my day. I think they are great. However, I caught this one particular turtle that did bite me. It did hurt. And to top it off, it would not let go. Got me by my index finger. I tried to shake it off, but that only made it worse. Finally, after a few minutes, it just let go. I think it thought that my finger was a great big worm. It probably was thinking "Woo-Hoo" look at the size of this one. Anyway, to make a long story short, that was the only bad, and it was not that bad, experience I have ever had with a Box Turtle. But, it just goes to show you that any turtle may bite, however it is usually for innocent reasons, like thinking your finger is a worm.

They are, for the most part, easy to care for, and quite calm. Once they get to know you, they will eat right from your hand. It is pretty cool. I highly recommend them.

Make sure that you look up the proper care, food, environment, food, etc. that this turtle requires. I cannot stress this enough. If you want a happy (and living turtle), you had best do this before getting one. Of any species!!!!!!

There is always the potential to be bitten when handling a turtle. Its the way they defend themselves. The exception seems to be animals that are very weak and or ill.

On the other hand tortoises are for the most part more docile. I have never experienced one trying to bite out of hostility although they will sometimes confuse fingers for food.

Keep in mind that all turtles and tortoises are animals with special care needs that are difficult for even mature adults to handle.

Any turtle is going to bite at you if it feel threatened. Some turtles may inflict a less damaging bite than others. But they all will bite.

You didn't say if you wanted a water turtle or box turtle. Pet stores have a variety and they will help you choose the one that's best for you and help choose the correct habitat.I have a box turtle and they require special care and even Vet visits.
