Cape Town has a "Mediteranean Climate" and is a winter rainfall area. August is our winter time so bring warm clothes and raingear. Go up Table Mountain in the cablecar as soon as the weather allows or you might miss out. The waterfront has more restaurants than you will need and don't forget to do the "Wine Route". Cape Point nature reserve is worth the visit as is a drive over Chapman's Peak. Visit the Blue Peter pub on Blouberg Strand and watch the sun set across the open ocean. Visit Robben Island and the Cape Town Castle for a taste of history. Above all else ENJOY my country, although I live in Johannesburg.

Apart from what already has been suggested, here's my advice:
1. The V&A Waterfront
2. Camps Bay central (lined with cool restaurants and bars)
3. Long Street, central Cape Town (lined with cool clubs and bars)
4. Edward Street (parallel to Durban Road), Tygervalley (lined with cool restaurants and bars)
5. Kloof Street, Cape Town (some great restaurants there)

Try Cafe Neo. It is by the water and quite nice. Aubergine for fine dining. When you need info like this try Lonely planet on line. They usually have some great hints and specifics on Hotels and Reataurants. Here is the South Africa page.

Staying alive and avoiding the violent crime is a feat all in itself.
