America is 300 million people who value their individuality and have roots all over the world. Naturally, there is a huge divergence of opinion on the merits of soccer. I'm an American and I love soccer but there are many - and you will hear from some of them on this forum - who hate the game. They will often call it boring, a kids game, or even claim it is only played by homosexuals.
Our latest attempt at a professional league (called MLS) began in 1995. It has now started to make money and is expanding. Overall interest in the sport is growing. I would say it is about the fifth most popular sport here, behind football (American that is), baseball, basketball and hockey.
In the last world cup I rooted for Italy. I have the American disdain for the French whom I generally think of as rude and arrogant. The Italians prove you get be great at all the same things as the French without being snobs.

I believe the best teams in the world are European. However, I think Latin American leagues, and specially, the Argentinian, Brazilian and Mexican are some of the most competitive of the world. In LA, the gap between the Champion and the rest of league is not a high as in Europe. It's almost impossible that Mallorca -or any of the worst ten teams in Spain- might beat Real Madrid. In Argentina, Boca Juniors might Champion in December, but San Lorenzo might be in June. Finally, the Mexican soccer league is very competitive. And the crowds there are just incredible. Club America and Guadalajara are the most popular teams.

Depends who you ask.
Remember, this is a country of immigrants and in major cities like New York or Los Angeles, many people keep to their roots and for most of the world, one of those roots is Futbol....
I thought France had the slightly better odds of of wining the final....and I was right except they couldn't finish off their attack. Italy was dominated by the French but the Italians did a great job in containing them.....Penalties are 50/50 but I did feel Buffon had a slightly better edge than Barthez....But penalties are only missed, never saved.

I wanted Italy. I work near an italian neighborhood in San Francisco, that's part of the reason. But Milan is my favorite club team as well, so Italy is one of the teams I've always liked when the world cup came around. Naturally I wanted the US to beat them in the opening round though.

Not many Americans like soccer.... that's why David Beckham is trying to change that and make soccer a popular sport in the US.
I prefer Italy.

france. and i'll tell you why....when italy faced the USA, that dirt bag daniel derossi elbowed brian mcbride in the face, which sent me into a rampage. i was furious, and turned against them! also, they way they beat australia was total BS!!! totti took a dive in the box, and it was totally obvious on the replay that he wasnt even touched. and then they scored the pk at the 92nd minute. total crap. and I LOVE ZIDANE!!!!!
