Put a new coat of self leveling morter down and you should have no problem. does not have to be thick just enough to fill in the grout and give a layer to the ceramic tile

You can place them over but certain steps must be followed

1- if there are any visible cracks, you may need to glue a membrane over the surface. A crack can mean the the sub-floor is moving and caused the tile to crack. If you glue any tile over that crack, when the sub-floor moves again, it will also crack the marble. A membrane is a thin piece of plastic designed to be glued on the tile, followed by the marble. When the sub floor cracks, it will do so under the membrane and not transfer to the marble
2- if you are gluing directly on the tile, if the tiles are bigger than 4 x 4 inches, you may need to scratch all the surface of the tile. If you have for example a 12 x 12 shiny tile, the glues are not designed to adhere to shiny surfaces. So you must scour the surface to allow the glue to bond.
3-The floor tiles have to be installed relatively straight or you will need a good expert to play with the glue to get a level floor surface
4- glue to be used, must be designed for this application-There are many brands on the market so i cannot tell you specifically which one. You should visit a tile supply shop for proper material recommendations.

You should tear out the existing tiles and put down a sub floor. I wouldn't go over the old. You can go to www.diynetwork.com and get help. Good luck!!

yes you can. a couple things i can think of. (a) lay new cement board down or (b) pour a self leveler down, its just like cement and will give you a new surface similar to cement. try MAPEI's line available at menards. http://www.mapei.com/MapeiAmericas/en/products_line3.htm
