I've heard a lot of I hate Bonds. I hate the Yankees, I hate...
I would just like to clarify something and see if you agree. I personally don't like the Yankees. WHY? Because I'm tired of hearing about them. Why am I always hearing about them? Because they're good. I don't like them, but I do respect them. I think you can dislike somebody (maybe hate is a strong word) but still respect them. Agree or Disagree?

Luke - I agree with your basic principle that you don't need to respect everybody. There are players that I feel poor values and morals and for that reason I don't respect them. I don't agree with everything you said, but I agree with the principle.

You have just expressed one of the most mature attitudes on Yahoo.answers. I wish more people were as decent. I agree with you 100%.
Besides, why is it whenever an NBA or NFL team wins all you find are people who are their fans? When an ML team does well everyone hates them. Why is that?

Yeas, that possible. I dislike Michael Jordan but I respect him, he was probably the best player to ever lace up. Now Kobe Bryant on the other hand, I dislike and I have zero respect. He lacks core values and morals. Jordan does too but not to Kobe's extreme.
In baseball terms, I dislike the Mets and I don't respect them. Now the Phillies I dislike but I respect them. Phillies fans are a bit uncivilized at times, like when it used to become Battery Park! But the Mets are just pompous jerks (well not all but the majority).
I also like Barry Bonds and respect him. He has done nothing wrong. People may feel morally he is wrong but I don't feel the same way. We do things in our own lives that people would consider wrong but it seems we choose not to look at ourselves before pointing fingers. Barry has always done things within the scope of the rules. If that's cheating in people's minds then so be it. Maybe we need to change the definition of cheating as written. Otherwise, drop it! Because like it or not, guys like Mays and Aaron have also taken things that I am sure people wouldn't agree with if in that same era. I consider Greenies and Red Juice to be on par with the things talked about in this era.

Of course you are right on an intellectual level, but that is not where sports live.
When I say that I hate the Yankees, it embodies respect, fear and an ingrained desire for my team to beat them. But I don't want fatally bad things to befall them. If I say I hate bin Laden, I do want fatally bad things to befall him.
That said, I hate the Yankees and hope the DRays sweep them this weekend at Yankee Stadium-which is about as likely to happen as Martians landing at Yankee Stadium in Devil Ray uniforms.

i like hating the pink Sox. i in my opinion stay in Beantown now and function many pals from right here and the conversations approximately which team is greater valuable by no ability end. i like the (knowledgeable) arguments we've. I definately know their historic past and their ability to play large baseball. i don't know followers that take all of it too in my opinion and finally end up hurting others because of the fact of it. Yelling Yankees suck in Qunicy marketplace as quickly as I placed on my hat is large. i like it. shifting right into a combat over it is stupid. i don't think of it may well be as exciting being a fan if there wasn't the competition... to boot, I even have discovered myself wanting the Sox to win whilst enjoying the Rays. i might extremely have the Sox in the playoffs with the Yanks than the Rays...
