Anyones guess. It is recent. It is deep and it is not a crater from an impact. Looks like something collapsed. Like the caves in the Yucatan peninsula. They are also quite circular. But what made this hole on Mars? And what is that foglooking substance on the nothern rim? One hypothesis is that underneath that area is indeed a cavesystem formed by water. And that the roof of it collapsed. And now some wtaer that was once safe from the harsh martian atmosphere is now escaping. If something was living done there it is doomed for sure.

Bit of a mix up here - the satellite photo of a planet with a black hole is Saturn..as taken by the Cassini spacecraft.
What's in there? It looks like the ghoulies live there and they are coming to get us...
Mars is the red/orange planet with the face of a some huge guy buried there..at least thats how they try to put it.
If there are caverns, gullies, holes, potholes on Mars then its only a matter of time before it reaches the earth. Photos of Mars do not always allow you to see what is on top or underneath the planet. Water under the surface there is visible as colouring differential towords the northern hemisphere.

Hi To me it looks like a sink hole with just a hint of illumination of the northern edge. The satellite was in almost perfect alignment with the illuminated edge of the hole so not much is seen. Since there is not much atmosphere to scatter light the bottom and other sides of the whole are not lit.
cheers

It's the Sphincter Abyss and your vacuous head is in it for asking such a stupid question -- no frame of reference.
What area of Mars -- give a landmark or two to locate.
And as far as "what's in there" is concerned, it's so gosh-darned obvious that if you can't see what's in the hole, what the heck do you expect scientists to see?
We land three slow-moving Rovers on the surface and one Martian Surveyor, and in less than two years you think we know everything about Mars? We haven't "scratched the surface", yet.

Nobody knows for sure. Pretty interesting stuff, huh? Makes you want to go there and find out, huh? It does me.
See the sources for pictures.
Or just google "holes on mars".

I believe what you are viewing might be a big mountainor a hole on the surface created by maybe a meteorite

Hard to say with out seeing the picture you're talking about, a link would be nice.
However, if I'm right in the picture you're talking about, its a shadow blocking the rest of the view.

Nothing important.
Mars has been over-hyped.
I don't really care what's there unless they plan on accelerating it's climate change, to make it useful for humans.
