Hi Geolicious,Fossicking is when miners go through the waste tip at an old mine and also examine the old workings for missed specimens.

I've done both, actually, and come out with some kick-a pieces, if I do say so myself. Thanks for the definition though- I didn't know what fossicked meant, either! I would've just said, "hunted through mine tailings" or something of the sort.

What does fossick mean?


I have quite a large collection of rocks and minerals. I used to work in a rock and mineral shop and I collected pounds of things from my field trips as an undergrad.

****Ohhhh. I didn't know it what called that. Even geologists learn something everyday. We always called it "going through the spoil pile".

Yes, I have. I have some nice galena, sphalerite, smithsonite(even some turkey fat smithsonite) collected from mine tailings.
