I think if you don't want to see it, then don't look. What is wrong with feeding a child? There are thousands of "parents" around the world that neglect their children on a daily basis, so I don't think there is anything wrong with a mother who cares for her child. If that means feeding it in public, then so be it. It's not like we want to whip our boobs out in public, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Of course you should breastfeed in public. Do you realize the average North American infant breastfeeds twice an hour? Also the more times a girl sees breastfeeding as she grows up the less likely she is to have problems with it as a mom.
I am truly sick of societies hang up over it, it is such a recent problem. Certainly all of our grandmothers nursed in public! If not your grandma then definitly your great-grandma.
Also using a blanket draws more attention to breastfeeding and is hot and uncomfortable, also for a new mom it can be impossible because they need to check what they are doing. Most babies will not allow a blanket at some point. If you are wearing an appropriate nursing bra and an appropriate shirt (not necessarily a nursing shirt) at most you see a half inch of breast and a few inches of mom's side. Yeah that's *offensive*. (Though if there is a mom that would rather not have someone see her stretch marks there are things you can wear under your shirt ;-) )

Women have breastfeed for many years. Way back in the day they would just pop it out and feed their hungry baby. At that time it was fine. For some reason people now think that there is something wrong with it. They have made so many different products for breastfeeding mothers how could anyone have a problem with it. Between the bras, the shirts and the blankets the babies just have enough room to latch on and feed. I think it's just fine.

99% of the time we travel in the car and usually it is not parked far away + we usually can predict when the baby is going to be hungry next so i go back to the car. Not bcoz i care about what others think, but bcoz i want to be able to relax when the baby nurses and not worry if something is showing.
In rare situations where I didnt have the option I find a safe place like a fitting room and take permission from the person in charge. Usually found supportive people.
Before people start feeling uncomfortable about mothers feeding in public they should realize that us mothers care about modesty too and are going through the same thoughts as you are but we put the baby's needs ahead.
I really support woman all across the world who put their baby's needs ahead and become mothers who decide to do it the hard way.

Yes, most resoundingly yes! The more Mom's that do it and do it in public, the more normal it will become!
To previous poster Jo girl....I have a 9 year old son, and he understands perfectly well that all mammal mothers make milk to nourish their children, that includes human babies. He doesn't think it's any big deal at all, in fact.
Breastfeeding and sex may both be natural acts, but they are not even close to being in the same category. Even children are sensible enough to know that.

Yes, I have and will! I always use a blanket but there is no law against it. But some people are rude about it.
For example I was waiting in the lobby for my husband to pick up his check and I had this older woman come yell at me for covering the baby up on a hot day (it was a reciveing blanket) and that I was crazy and all sorts of stuff. It hurt for a while but my husband says I should just chill its my baby and I'm not going to starve her jsut becuase some people can't mind their own business! Just like its rude to some people to smoke while your eating at a restraunt.
I also been kicked out of restrants and a church! Can you belive it. I make sure I'm well covered. The church told me the men were bothered by it and I would all ways sit in the last row so I could deal with the child.

Well I personally think that anywhere a mother is allowed to bottlefeed, a mother should also be allowed to breastfeed. It only makes sense if you think about it. Why should society force a mother to feed her baby via a "fake" boob, just because they are all mixed up about the primary function of a breast. It is NOT a sex organ, folks.
You won't find a lot of negative responses to this question posting it in the newborn section, as most responders are pregnant, or parents. If you try posting it somewhere more "neutral" like say, polls and surveys. You will receive a much more colorful list of responses.

I think this should be allowed and not be looked as shameful! I was listening the radio the other day (a station I dislike but as I passed the radio I heard). That the radio station host was saying that he found it disturbing and gross. HELLO it is NATURAL. Why do you think that Nature provided a woman with that?
Agh I was disgusted by his comment! I mean he supports other things and he dislikes breastfeeding in public. I was so mad!
A mother should be allowed and not be forced to cover up when she is feeding her hungry child.
It is nature and well the baby is demanding to be fed, he doesnt care if she is in public or are home HE IS HUNGRY
:)

As a man, it doesn't bother me.
I see how some people might be offended when it is flaunted in a wierd way (ie, the boob hanging out all over the place, Mom not paying attention that the kids has stopped latching on) etc. I've see it all, as a lady at one of my regular places of work breastfeeds.
Never bothers me, but MANY women i know get pissed.
I think it's natural, and if women want to go topless, they can here in NYC - it's legal.
So, don't worry what others think - feed yer tot yer tit when he's hungry.

Wow. I am so amazed at the positive response... the Y/A crowd is rarely this positive on this question!!
But YES, absolutely. Breastfeed in public, in private. Blanket or no blanket (my baby's a sweaty one, so no on the blanket for him), discreetly or not... I will NEVER hide in a bathroom. I have gone in a dressing rooms, but only because he was too distracted to settle down and eat when i was sitting on a bench in a high-traffic area.
