Capitalism is the republican religion. The idols are wealth, power and celebrity.
The poor black man was not allowed to enter the famous white's man church. He asked God: why oh lord?
And the lord answered "don't despair my son, I tried to enter that church myself and I was rejected"

Isn't that Al Whore at the Oscars pretending he's a movie star? ALL politicians (the non working rich) love celebrity and think that they are royalty. The "working poor" as you refer to them are better off than 99% of the people in the world. Nevertheless, what needs they do have haven't been addressed by either party.
