This used to happen to me a lot when I was little, stopped for a few years, and recently started happening every now and then.
I wake up in the middle of the night and I feel like I can't move, scream, anything. I don't feel like something is holding me down, but like I just have absolute minimum control over my body.
I asked my mom about it, and she told me that when you are asleep, your soul floats around outside of your body. Sometimes, you wake up and it doesn't return immediately. When it finally does, you can move again.
I don't know how true this is or isnt, but over hte last couple years of having these phenomena happen to me, I started feeling like there was a presence of utter, absolute evil next to me that I couldn't see, and I would start to panic so I could move.
The last time it happened (a couple weeks ago), there was an actual big black void of pure evil on the ceiling hovering over me. I know for a fact that this last one was part dream, but should I be worried about the "evil" being/presence getting worse??
Sorry I went off on a tangent lol....I answered your question up in there somewhere.
Good luck with your infrared lighting....Keep us posted!

They´re called dreams.
Happens to me all the time. This is how the body works when we sleep. If we could move around while sleeping we would fall down the stairs an hurt ourselves. That is why we can´t. And if you have a dream where you feel like you have to move then it can be really scary. I constantly get attacked by aliens in my dreams. Only they are Gigers aliens. From the movies. And they are only dreams.

I felt something like that before, turned out to be my cat, he's a fat cat, and I was half asleep, but a nice slash to the claws across my face was enough to wake me up and snap me out of it.
I do believe however, to address your alien point, that I have seen one before, if I truely have and it wasn't a dream or my mind playing tricks on me, you don't need infrared, you'll be able to see it, and therefor capture it on any camera.

No, I have never experienced that. Go ahead with your camera idea. You will not see anything but yourself. It is just a dream or unusual sleep condition that some people have.
By the way, that has nothing at all to do with astronomy or space.

Something like this has happened to me. Not as bad, though. I felt like I couldn't move and I tried to scream but I couldn't. It stopped after about 30 seconds.

Yes I have. You should try the camera idea and see how your body moves. Maybe it's a neurological thing.

i've had that before. some call it "the devil riding your back" or something, but it's really sleep paralysis. i was scared as hell, i thought it was something outta this world too...until i talked to some doctors and did some research. check this link out to help you get started.

No, I think your question belongs in the "Paranormal Psychosis" section of the "Entertainment" department.
Certainly not in Astronomy and Space.

There's a well-known condition called sleep paralysis, which this most closely resembles.
