In Vietnam, I worked for the American Red Cross. We were not military, but had to wear military uniforms, so that we would not stand out in a crowd, making a viable target for a sniper.

I was at Americal Division Headquarters in Chu Lai. It was raining and I was wearing a poncho, that covered my Red Cross Insignias. A bird colonel was approaching me, and he anticipated a salute since only a General out ranked him and he knew I was not a General. He saluted and I did not. After he passed me, he turned and yelled" Soldier, don't you salute a superior officer"? I replied sorry sir, as I saluted, I am a civilian. He went his way and I went mine.
