I just returned from a long road trip and, a week later, my car is making a fairly loud whirring sound. It seems to be orginating from the driver's side. Generally the problem starts when my car hits 40 mph and then lasts about 10 minutes or so before usually going away. It seems to get a little louder with increasing speed. At first I thought it might be tied to the AC since the AC got plenty of use on the trip and, at one point, began leaking water onto my feet as a drove but I'm curious what everyone else might think.

It's about 83,000 miles. The water leaking only happened once when I had been using the AC all morning and didn't happen again for the remainder of the trip. I'm more worried about the sound now. It's sort of a metallic whirring.

it sounds like the power steering resivoir is low on fluid... check it,and if you ran it low fora long time, you might have ruined the p/s pump....

don't worry about the water its condensation from the a/c working all that time--happens to all cars... whirring sound could be a loose hanger under the car that holds the exhaust pipes - sometimes if running say 40 mph angle of some plastic loose under the car--protecting the under carriage -

Sounds like you have a bearing going out. The water on your feet may be a plugged condestate drain line. Get that checked out. The water should drain to the outside.

good luck.

Check all of your fluid levels and top them off if they are low....It could be a tire, it could be a bearing,....make sure there is nothing dragging underneath the car...a stick or peace of plastic....did you run over something on your trip. Look in the fender wells to make for sure the fender linings are tight..

Good Luck

I would suggest that you check or have checked a couple of things:: 1) the power steering unit for fluid. 2) the water pump, 3) with your hood open and the engine running, watch your fan to see if it running straight and true. 4) check the belt pulley idle adjuster.

In my experience the "whirring" sound is caused when the power steering fluid is low and the internal gears are exposed.

THE SOUND COULD BE COMING FROM THE A/C COMPRESSOR AND OR THE A/C COMPRESSOR CLUTCH BEARING.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
