You'll want to "layer" your clothing. Unless there is a heat wave, you probably won't wear shorts. You can wear short sleeved shirts, but always carry a sweater or jacket with you. It is a walking city, so wear comfortable shoes.
Check weather.com right before you leave for the forecast.
It tends to be a cool city- not too hot.

Have you ever heard of the quote "The coldest winter I spent was the summer in San Francisco"? That's how the weather is there. I spend every summer there, and I love it! Cool at night, in the 60's,70's to sometimes low 80's in the day. Definitely bring a wind breaker, light fleece and long pants. Maybe one pair of shorts and short sleeves if you want to go north to Marin County (or south). Alcatraz is great but dress really warm. Have a great time! It's my favorite city!!

The real heat doesn't hit San Francisco until late September and October. Weird, I know, but that's how it is.
I love San Francisco!! the only good thing about California!

Well, it should be fairly warm throughout the day...so take lightweight clothing, capri's...shorts...cotton shirts...tanks..BUT...because it is the bay are...I highly recommend that you take along a sweater and socks and shoes. The evenings can be a bit chilly..some times even the early mornings. I wouldn't take a heavy jacket or anything, but certainly something to keep a slight chill away. Sunglasses are a must, especially if you will be driving or sight seeing!!
Have fun!!!!!

It is usually pretty warm in San Fransisco in August, you may, however want to bring a light sweater for evenings. Happy traveling.

Cathy S's advice was spot on--layers and comfy shoes.
We tend to think it's a heat wave if it gets over 75 degrees.
