I really don't understand how come people, and even coaches tell me that to throw faster, you need to work out at the gym and get stronger arms. Like seriously arms have hardly anything to do whatsoever. I've been pitching ever since I was a little kid and all I've heard is the same thing. My friend pitches on the same team as me, and hits the gym 4 times a week. In the past 2 years his velocity has increased 4-5 mph. All I've been doing is doing good fitness workouts without lifting weights, increasing my flexibility, and focusing more on my stride out of my windup as well as the mechanics. When I was 15 I was throwing in the 70's and now at 18, I throw low 90s. Why do people (including coaches)say that lifting weights is the way to go, when myself (never lifting weights) have been able to hit 90s? Im not even big either. Im 5'10 and 162 lbs.

I have played baseball my whole life and I agree with you to an extent. I don't think that working out is going to make you faster, what it does is tones up the muscles in the shoulder and arms and allows you more flexibility. If you don't strengthen your arms and shoulders you are more likely to tear a muscle or damage your shoulder in the future. I know because that is what happend to me and I haven't played baseball for almost 2 years and I am having surgery in Sept to repair my rotator cuff and labrium tear. After that I have 6 months of recovery and about a year of rehabilitation before I can return to the diamond.

If you ever plan on playing Ball professionally velocity is very important. So is building arm strength. I to was a pitcher when younger and worked out a lot. By the time I was 18 I was throwing in the upper 90's and my change-up was in the upper 80's. The pros look for this along with stride and balance. Your coach is right. Weightlifting is important so use it for your safety and against arm injury.

The only thing the gym has to do with it is endurance, and it prevents injury the stronger your arm is. Velocity has very little if anything to do with how muscular you are. Take a look at Billy Wagner, Pedro Martinez...heck Greg Maddux used to throw 93-94 when he 1st came up, and he wasn't any bigger than he is now. All 3 of those guys weigh less than 180 lbs, and aren't any taller than 6 ft.

Hit the burden room. artwork on shrink physique and middle. this is a extensive element of pitching. Mechanics on my own can benefit straightforward MPH, so get good with the mechanics, besides as usually happening long toss to reinforce arm skill. 200 crunches on my own won't do it. you may hit the coolest and shrink abs, besides because of the fact of fact the obliques, and you like some rotational middle artwork of their besides. Push united statesdoesn't be the final pitchers workout ordinary basic, chest and pitching do no longer pass hand in hand, and hands do no longer possibly effect velocity too lots, different than it somewhat is a throwing action. no longer preserving do no longer do push ups, because of the fact of fact extensive-unfold it somewhat is an fairly good workout ordinary basic. in simple terms no longer your ultimate pitching. in case you may no longer get to a weight room, analyze some exercises you're able to do with weights, like plyometrics, and physique weight exercises. playstation . Throwing starts from the legs, through the back, and then the arms. Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan had long careers because the throw through their legs. You will increase your speed by lifting weights, because bigger muscles can increase your armspeed.

The objective is to get the hitters out and not to see how hard you can throw. It is very possible to get hitters out with a variety of other pitches and use the fastball you have to keep them honest. If you can throw 90mph that is good enough to be a very competitive pitcher if you can throw it for strikes and have other pitches to go with it.

I think a lot of it is your mechanics and windup rather than how big your arms are. If it was just arm strength you'd see Arnold Schwarzeneggar looking guys pitching, and you don't.
