I am also in Florida and am glad you are taking this so seriously at your age. There are a number of things you can do.

First, as some of the others have said, learn to write well. That will not only help you get into law school, but will also serve you well once you get out.

Second, when you are in college, take psychology and business courses. You will use both of them when you practice law, even though you may not think so now.

Third, get involved in things that will allow you to show your leadership and community involvement. As a Yale Law School admission officer once told me, there are hundreds of qualified applicants every year. The difference between them is what the students have done away from class. That is where they can shine.

I am involved in the law school application process right now and here are the things that have got me into a really good position:

1) Good grades. Take challenging courses and work hard in them to get good grades. Its better to get a B in a difficult class than get an A in a hard class.

2) Take writing intensive courses.

3) Get involved in a few extracurricular activities.

4) Practice for the LSAT far in advance. I probably took 40 to 50 sample LSATs over a year period. On the first exam, I got a 158 and on the actual LSAT in June 2007 I got a 163.

As everyone else has said: the most important thing is to develop your ability to read and communicate.

With regard to communication the college course that helped me most of all was in formal logic. They don't teach it in high school, but if you ever find a class at any level that includes logic and/or argumentation, take it. There are also books on the subject. It will help you organize and focus on the important facts in any written or spoken communication; and logically organize what you say to others.

Study hard. Get good grades.

Get used to reading complex passages and understanding them intent. Practice your writing skills.

Reading, comprehension and writing are what makes a good law student.
