The older the computer, probably from about 2000 till 2005 with the much heavier and thicker models are called laptops, desinged to stay on your laps. However, the lighter computer, the one where you can easily hold them in your arms like a notebook, hence are called notebooks.

Notebooks tend to be slightly smaller and thinner then a laptop. That's why it's called a Notebook it's thinner and smaller.
