Recently we have purchased a Z3(98) and it came with a Sony Radio. When driving it will shut off every now then and again. I have checked the wiring and it all seems to be in tact. Is it that the original wire does not supply enough power or is there something I am missing. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks David

These are some of the simple but annoying and time-consuming problems you get sometimes...

Here's what I would do:

1. Bad connection?

Since your Sony radio isn't factory, it is likely it is connected to a BMW compatible harness plug either by solder, crimp or simply twisted together (I hope not)!

Check the connection integrity there. 90% likelyhood you will see a problem there.

Unless the radio has a purpose-built Sony-to-BMW adapter... in which case it "should" be more reliable.

Also, don't forget to check fuses... I know it's counter intuitive, but I found that sometimes, more than 1 fuse supplies power to accessories.

2. Isolated your speakers

Assuming you do not have another amplifier in the car (speakers are directly connected to the radio) the other possible reason is one of your speakers are shorting.

Try playing the unit at ZERO volume, and see if it turns off. If it doesn't, play it only at 1 speaker at a time using your fader and balance settings. With some luck, you will find it will shut off on 1 of your speakers. This is your problem speaker. Open it up and check wiring behind the speakers.

3. It could be simply a bad radio.

Go to Crutchfield and order a new radio. They will supply a nice harness adapter with it for free too!

Could be a short in one of the speakers, if one of the speaker wires is making contact to ground, an overload in the stereo will turn it off. It is possible that your connections are less than desirable, But I would lean more towards a ground issue.

Best of Luck!
