Since you're posting this in the Food Service section, I'll assume you're looking for a food service job. In which case, the best thing to do is to check the websites of possible places directly. Once you've done that, just use the phone book...call the places and ask to speak to managers and explain that you are looking for work and are they hiring? Then, if you need to BART over there, at least you know you'll be spending transit costs for legitimate leads instead of fake ads. And once you actually start working somewhere, I'm sure that you'll be able to hit someone up for a small loan to cover your initial transit costs until you earn enough to pay the person back.

Well, the reason you haven't found a good job is because you won't find one on the internet. Internet jobs are insurance, sales, and basically junk jobs that nobody wants. Put together a resume, get a haircut and hide any tattoos, take out any piercings and look like the "boy next door." Concentrate on getting a job close to your house so the transportation issue won't be as severe. Wear a polo and khaki pants. I'm sure that isn't how you really want to dress but this is the way you get hired. Go pound the payment.

I'm going to assume you live in SF, or at least close to it. I was there over the weekend a few months back, and boy it was a huge pain trying to drive everywhere - so we ended up walking, and it was great. "Pounding the pavement" is probably the best way for you to get in and out of places conveniently in that hectic city, I mean look at all of that foot traffic!
No decent job's just going to fall into your lap - you need to have (and take) the initiative to get off your butt and get out there. Any possible employer will give you more of a chance if you show up (dressed to the nines doesn't hurt), rather than just calling and asking, "hey, are you hiring".

I would pound the pavement. If you don't even want to do the work it takes to get a job, do you think an employer is going to want to give you a job? An offer isn't just going to fall into your lap. Especially when there are people who ARE willing to go do the legwork to get a job, who would you rather hire? Lazy guy or guy who takes initiative?

I listed my resume on Monster.com and got this job and an offer on another job. This is a good job shipyard accounting and pays pretty well.
When I was young looking for accounting work I found all the places I wanted to work in the yellow pages and arraigned them by location then starting in the center of the city walked door to door until I found one, soon after I accepted that one I was offered another.
Now with yellow page on line they will sort them by distance for you.
I emailed dozens of resumes to places I found on Monster.com and got several interviews. Only respond to the ones you are qualified for.
