My favorite places to stay that are a "good bargain/price" and very nice and have all the amenities that I want (i.e. buffets, bars, lounges, great casino) are the following:
1. Luxor - this casino has a HUGE pool and has about every game that you want to play (including a nice poker room). It also has a pretty cheap buffet compared to the other mainstreem hotels, and the rooms are very nice and its cool being in a hotel that has slanted ceiling b/c it is in the shape of a pyramid. You can get rates near $70-80/night with early bookings during the week, and ~ 150-180/night on holidays/wkends
2. New York New York - This hotel always has deals and has a lot of great bars and restaurants, and the people that stay here seem generally younger. The games are great here (no poker room) and the atmosphere is fast and loud (so if you want a quieter hotel this is not for you). Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
3. Monte Carlo - Has a great Micro brewery and great casino as well - which is something I always look for. The buffet here is probably one of the best bargains around. The swiming pool here is pretty nice too, though Luxor's pool definately is the best. Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
4. Mirage or Treasure Island - These are a little more pricey, but you do get a little more for what you pay for. The rooms a little bit nicer, and each have a nice club/lounge that is trendy and fun to hang out in (Tangerine in Treasure Island, JET at Mirage). They has have great buffets in each - much better in quality than the previously mentioned, but also at a much higher price ($30/person vs. < $18 at the other places). Price is around $120-130/night early booking/wkdays, $200-280/wkends.
You can also stay at cheaper places like the Stratosphere, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Tropicana, if you'd like - but I wouldnt recommend it (Price is around $60-70/night early booking/wkdays, $120-140/wkends.). Hotels in Vegas ARE the MAIN attraction, so I would spend a little extra money, plus this would prevent you from having to spend a lot of money on cabs. Have fun and hope this helps.
Good luck and I just wanted to let you know that I think its a good idea to re-center yourself and perspective by letting go - gambling, buffets, and shows in the heat of the desert is a good choice. Have fun.

If kids are going on the trip and if you have a small budget, you could try the Circus Circus. They have a mall inside the hotel and they also have short free circus shows. Some other nice hotels are the Bellagio which is really beautiful. It has some very nice fountains, a gallary of fine art, and a beautiful pool. The pool is in a "distinctive courtyard setting" and "captures the romance of the Old World in the classical setting of a Mediterranean Villa". The Bellagio has quite a few restaurants including the Pool Cafe which is on a patio overlooking the pool and courtyards. The Pool Cafe has mediterranean food I believe. They also have a buffet called The Buffet which has food from Italy, China, Japan, and it also has seafood and American food. There's quite a few more restaurants in the bellagio but if I listed them all this answer would be far too long! The Bellagio has a casino as well for all your gambling needs! Here is the Bellagio homepage if you wanna check out some other things about it or wanna see some pictures of it go here: http://www.bellagio.com/index.asp
There are a lot of hotels in Las Vegas and I would also reccomend that you check out the New York New York hotel, the Mirage hotel, the Treasure Island Hotel, the MGM Grand hotel, and I'm pretty sure all the hotels I've listed have a casino. I would reccomend the Bellagio and it's also rated the #1 hotel in Las Vegas by Yahoo Travel. I would also reccomend that you check out the Wet N' Wild water park but it's closed :( Have fun on your Las Vegas trip!

I'm partial to the MGM Grand for a lot of reasons. It's close to the airport, the Monorail stops there, it has plenty of machines, and I can walk to at least 3 other casinos quickly. Oh, and it's near the M and M store - 4 floors of nothing but M and M stuff.
Anyway, if you want a lot of advice in one place about hotels, dining, and lots of other things visit Vegas.com (link below).
Besides the other tabs at the top of the page, be sure to click on the Vegas Guide tab and then the Insider Tips link about half way down that page on the right.
Some people also like the other link.
Have a great time.

maybe ask a travel agent to help you with a package air/hotel included ? sometimes the packages are cheaper. Priceline.com is a good place to bid on rooms. there is a site called biddinghelp.com people post their bids / and if they were accepted or not. i have seen some good prices on hotels there. Gambling is everywhere including the airport so you just need to figure out where you want to stay and how much you are willing to pay. i have heard people say that when they get there , they sign up for players cards at the casino, they are free and have a lot of discounts / suggestions.

In my opinion the best bang for the buck is the Orleans Hotel and Casino. It's not on the strip, but it's a short drive. It will usually cost $100 a night ( more on Friday and Saturday, less on every other day).
The Orleans has a large casino, large rooms, good food, a movie theater, bowling alley, and other amenities.

From my experience, I think Bally's is a good place. It's in the middle of the strip, has moderate pricing, and has a decent buffet. It's directly connected to Paris, so you can walk to Paris without having to endure the heat. The Bellagio and Caesar's Palace are directly across the street.

Hello,
Both my wife and myself stayed recently at the Luxor. We stayed in the newer part. It was an excellent experience. I stayed at other hotels on the strip. And this is as good if not better for the price. Have Fun!
