1) Because God commanded us to. Its that simple- God commanded Abraham to circumcise himself, his son, and all his household (in other words the people he had converted) as a sign of the covenant between God, Abraham and the Jewish nation that was started by Abraham.
2) On a more esoteric note it is taught that when God create Adam he said "Let US make man". It is understood in the esoteric sources that this is God addressing the Jews of the future, inviting us to be his partners in creation. In the Talmud, masechta Sanhedrin, it is taught that certain people were born complete- in other words, already circumcised. Amongst these are Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon and others. This shows that the completion of the creation of man is the circumcision- thus fulfilling God's statement of "let us make man", since it is us who complete the creation by circumcising the baby boy at eight days old.

men are circumsized at birth because it is a hazard if the penis is not circumsized. with the extra skin laying around and folding over on the Male Penis, you are more prone to infection. Circumcision is not only done in the jewish religion. in fact, the majority of males in the United States have their penises circumsized. this is called a Bris in the Christian/Catholic religions.
the only negative affect of having a penis circumsized that i can think of is if the person doing it messes up or does it improperly. Make sure that the person doing the circumsision is either a rabii or a hospital nurse or doctor. Circumsision is no longer as painful for children if they are numbed. Hope i helped!

The Jewish covenant is circumcision. Parents get their male babies circumcised 8 days after birth and it is done by a trained rabbi-type person. I do believe this person has a specific name but I cant think of it.

I'm not Jewish, and even I know the answer to that (LOL). First and foremost it's a cleanliness thing, and I guess it's also a way of showing you belong to that religion. Incidentally Muslims are also circumcised. There are no negative effects as far as I can see. Sometimes it is a necessary operation in an infant to be able to make sure he can "go" Ok.

It was a commandment to Abraham, as a sign of the covenant between G-d and him. As far as I know there are no negative consequences, and in fact some studies have indicated a lower incidence of some diseases in circumcised males.

I was never told the exact religious reason other than it is a covenant with God.
Face it - you don't exactly have a choice in the matter since it is done when you are 8 days old.
From a practical standpoint I can see why it was done.

Moyel/ Mohel Myself, Mr Stiggo and Tigerlilly have all given the correct answer. If people actually prefer to give thumbs down to accurate responses, so be it. It just confirms that there are a lot of fools on this site.
