Put him on a diet, feed him more greens.
Making him exorcise sounds impossible, hes a tortoise, slow and steady wins the race.

1. Right diet. Feeding your tortoise the right foods in the right amounts is KEY. Without knowing your species and size, I cannot help with details, but give http://www.tortoisetrust.org a try.

2. Right housing. Big spaces allow more exercise- especially if there is a variety in it. Adding some climbing spaces, etc. will help.

3. Fresh air and sunshine- but make sure the tortoise can hide and cool off as well. Indoor tortoises gain weight faster than outdoor torts do.

4. Fix your thinking. Why do you want it to eat the same? Tortoises in the wild often binge eat for a few hours and then sleep for days at a time. We mammals almost ALWAYS overfeed out reptile pets because WE need a lot of food, so we figure they do too. A tortoise only needs a little food every day- a pile of food the size of its head is PLENTY!

A healthy tortoise is a slightly hungry tortoise!

Why dose your tortoise need to lose weight? It is difficult to answer without knowing the species and the weight and length of your tortoise.

To ensure you have a healthy tortoise you should provide it with enough room so it can get plenty of exercise. A tortoise will get fat if kept in a small area.

If your tortoise has suddenly put weight on and is female could it be carrying eggs? In which case you need to ensure your tortoise gets a calcium rich diet and you need to provide a nesting site. After the eggs have been laid the tortoises weight should return to normal.

Exercise and Calcium

The above mention of an outdoor yard is right on the money. Not only will the tortoise get a chance to work off some of its calories moving around, but it needs occasional sunlight to produce Vitamin D.

Another thought is that if you do not give your tortoise enough calcium, they can grow bigger than their shells. When this occurs, their flesh looks puffy around the shell openings and they are not able to pull themselves in as far as they used to be able to. Either supplement its diet with some calcium, or feed it foods rich in calcium such as broccoli or earth worms.

Does your tort have a nice exercise yard outside? He needs to be out there in the sun and moving around once in a while. Iget mine outside every good day we have here (in Minnesota)

I can't imagine how much overweight it could be. Are you sure it's overly fat? Sometimes turtles just kinda balloon up with air. My water turtles kinda did that, not the land ones though..

Reptiles are supposed to gain weight in the summer. They will eat a lot because torts are vegetarians and there is not a lot of nutriton in what they eat so like horses, they will eat and poop a lot.

If you know what kind of tort you have, go ahead and join a Yahoo group about it. Yahoo groups are really great and have a lot of people in there who know specifics about speecees and how to best care for them.

Good luck :0)
