4y - x = 8

Transpose x

4y - x + x = x + 8

4y = x + 8

Divide both sides of the equation by 4

4y / 4 = x / 4 + 8 / 4

y = x / 4 + 8 / 4

y = 1/4x + 2

x / 4 is the same as 1/4x

4y-x = 8
Add x to both sides
4y = x+8
Divide by 4
y = 1/4 x + 8/4
Simplify
y = 1/4 x + 2

They are not the same.

Y was expressed in terms of x.

4y - x = 8
To express y in terms of x:
4y = 8 + x
y = 8 +x/4

Further simplify y = 8 +x/4
y = 8/4 + x/4
y = 2 + x/4

y = 2 + x/4 is the simplest form you can get. THe person above me is stupid. Why???

y = 2 + x/4 IS NOT equal to y = 1/4x + 2

Now I ask you, ask your teacher and you'll find out I'm right.

The equation in your question is y = 1/4x + 2 which translates to: Y is equal to 1 over 4x plus 2.

The person above me is so worng. He thought that y = 1/4x + 2 is the same as y=(1/4)x+2.

y=(1/4)x+2 was his final equation as you can see on his answer.
y=(1/4)x+2 was not the equation your question. The equation on your question was " y = 1/4x + 2 "

I hope you don't select him as the best answer.

To solve for Y you need to first add X to both side...

4y - X + X = 8 + X

that leads to

4y = 8 + X (The -X + X equals zero... it drops out).

Then, divide both sides by four...

4y/4 = 8/4 + X/4

The above becomes
y = 2 + x/4 which is 1/4x + 2

Solve the first equation for y and see if it is in the same form as the answer in quotes:

4y - x = 8
4y = 8 + x
4y = x + 8
y = (x + 8)/4
y = x/4 + 8/4
y = (1/4)x + 2

Take y=1/4x+2 and multiply both sides by 4 to get...

4y=x+8 eg. (4*y=4y) and (4*1/4x=x) and (4*2=8)

Then subtract x from both sides to get...

4y-x=8

to express the equation 4y-x=8 as a function you must solve for y.
to do this add +x to both sides of your equation then divide both
sides by 4. to get y=1/4x+2

Lets solve the equation 4y - x = 8 to show their similarity.

4y - x = 8

4y=8+x

y= (8+x)/4

now distribute

y=8/4 +x/4

y=2+x/4

or

y=(1/4)x+2

4y - x = 8 == ..(divide all terms by 4)

y - x/4 = 8/4 == . . . .(add x/4 to both sides)

y = 8/4 + x/4 == . . .(simplify)

y = 2 + x/4 ==

y = x/4 + 2

Start: (this is in "general equation of a line" form ax + by = c)

4y - x = 8

Move everything over to other side of equal sign to get y by itself...

4y = 1x + 8 ---------------->Add the 1x to both sides to move it to the other side...

4y/4 = 1x/4 + 8/4 --------------->Divide everything by 4 to get it to the other side...

y = (1/4)x + 2

This is standard linear "slope-intercept" form. y = mx + b.
