I am currently 21 weeks and the last ultrasound around 19 weeks showed a cyst on the brain. The doctor said it will most likely go away but i can't help but to worry. How common is it?

Fairly common. They didn't even start detecting these until the ultrasound technology got better. 95% of the time, they just dissipate and there is no problem. My youngest had one and she's like the smartest out of all my kids.

It is a frightful worry, of course, because all they do is tell you to come back in 2-4 weeks for another u/s to see if it's smaller. Just keep telling yourself that odds are, your baby is just fine.

I think since the technology of ultrasounds is getting so far advanced they are finding more and more. My son had one at the first ultrasound, and my doctor also said it was nothing to worry about and called it an "incidental finding". I'm sure that they checked for any other abnormalities and if they told you not to worry, then I'm sure everything is ok. Scary as heck though isn't it? All of the things I could find on the internet said that these types are since are "loosely" linked to certain chromosomal abnormalities, but they would usually show up with the cyst AND problems with the hands, feet, and internal organs. I'm sure your doctor checked all of those things. My doctor told me that they are seeing as many as 1-2 a month and I live in a fairly small town. I go in next Thursday for another ultrasound to make sure it's gone, I guess only time will tell. Good luck to you!

I don't know statistically how common they are, but I have two friends that had cysts detected in the brain at around 19-20 weeks. Both the cysts disappeared and their children were born completely healthy.
