When the foundation of my garage floor was poured, it appears two five gallon buckets were set upside down in the foundation. The tops of the buckets are just below the surface of the floor. Why was this done?

Two possable things
1, The buckets are sitting ontop of a shut off vavle or a drain clean out.
2, If the buckets are in the corners it could be a sump pump pit. Alot of times builders run pipe and "crocks" ( the bucket) under the concrete in case you get alot of ground water in the area and you need a sump pump. It is cheaper to run the pipe while the floor is open then it is when the slab is poured.

Maybe they ran just a wee bit short on cement so used the empty buckets as filler.

It sounds kind of odd to me, but what the heck do I know.

I have seen this done to use as drains (filled with stone) later. It's illegal to do this but it is still done by some.

I have no idea & have never heard of that before. If you hired the floor to be done, ask the men who did it.
