Freud asserted that it is the libidinal ties which unify the members of the crowd. Smelser asserts that collective behavior occurs when people perceive that there is no other means to attain the desired goal.in his opinion, collective behavior arises when the normal institutions do not help.

I think Smelser's is more scientific because it allows us to test hypotheses. Freud was more an armchair psychologist. How do you measure libido?
