We shall relax and do not worry. The evolution of humans and the things that we do are just part of the natural plan, evolution, God's plan, whatever you call it to make yourself feel secure. Yes, we can do some things to limit the degree of pollution as such but let us slow the panic down.
This is the problem with self serving movements. We tend to jump to the extreme of thought apposed to a critical analysis.
We we have caused some extinction of animal species, then it was meant to be so.
They day I see nobody using any form of paper, any thing that was produced from petroleum (which includes the electricity running our computers right now), and actually tending otherwise to the planet I will continue enjoying my life as is.
Relax

Three reasons:
1. Greed. Some people only care about what they get for themselves right now, and don't care about the future.
2. Ignorance. Some people are too stupid to know that they are destroying their world with their actions.
3. Lack of foresight. Many people simply cannot see beyond what is happening today. Things are alright right now, so they figure they'll be fine in the future.
What can we do? Vote according to this issue. Learn more about the issue. Educate people on the issue. Let your Congressmen know how you feel about this issue. Then live your life as environmentally friendly as you possibly can and set a good example!

The planet is a giant rock. We are not harming it in any measurable way. We are possibly slightly affecting the surface of the earth. The life at the surface of the earth is doing very well yet there are some of a particular political bent that feel guilty whatever they or anyone else does. You should feel grateful that humans are the dominant vertebrate. There is a saying, when you lack food, you have one problem but if you have Lots of food, you have lots of problems. You got way too much food IMO.

Gosh! I almost didnt give an answer to this question because I read all the other answers put up so far and they're all really good ones!
You are being led astray by your teachers and the talking heads in the TV box and on the Radio box. These people are ALL towing a party line. You see, in the world, there are some 6 billion (+) people; and all of these people have opinions...varying opinions. If you keep seeing/hearing a certain opinion expressed by those that have the position to spread their opinion far and wide, and this is a certain singular and unified opinion, be suspicious and afraid...very afraid. Why you may ask? Because there is someone or a group of someones in the background using what is called the Hegelian Principle to cause a social change for a particular and unspecified purpose.
This is called social engineering and it is made possible by the information age. the purpose of the information age is to take away peoples desire to think for themselves, to creat a herd mentality on social issues so they may be more easily manipulated for WHATEVER purpose. This used to be accomplished by wars across small frontiers. Wars wasted resources and people needed to fuel thelabor force. It became easier to simply manipulate their minds to be willing participants...none of the Germans wanted to become annhilists, but the very affective propoganda machine of Hitler took away their desire, not their ability, to think for themselves creating an entire country of citizens with one particular mindset...conquer, kill, destroy everyone and everything.
There is a current move to allegedly "protect" the earth from destruction and our environment from decay. It is an attempt to unite the entire planet under one single mindset; genesis seed of oneness. This is extremely dangerous, because of man's tendancy to be accepted so much so that he has a built in "herd" mentality that is always there to be manipulated. How do you think advertising works so well??? In the early 1960s, John F. Kennedy commissioned, secretly, a commission called the Iron Mountain Study Group. Its job was to study and come up with alternatives for war as a national activity; he genuinely wanted to end all war in the world...a brilliant and noble effort. The report was issued at the 3-year end of the study, but to Lyndon Baynes Jhonson and not to Kennedy. LBJ stands out as one of the most sinister presidents of the 20th century, by far more evil then CLinton could ever aspire to. This study was burried and was never brought to light, but for he clever and unique way that a single member of the study group made its results known...by the publishing a so-called fictional account titled, "Report from Iron Mountain."
It had a short publsihing and has since faded from existence except for some who found the book in used book stores and completely transcribed it, faithfully in *.pdf format and make it available on numerous sites all across the internet. In this book the results were clearly shown. Some of the activities identified to substitute for war were:
- Nationalization of the Schools
- Nationalization of the public health care system
- The creation of a National Space program
- The creation of a National/Global environmental crisis
- Creation of a worldwide policing activity
Do any of these activities sound familiar?
So stop listening to the talking heads and start thinking for yourself. I know, it'll make you unpopular with the airheads that litterally CAN'T think for themselves and need to be spoon fed their opinions, but take it upon yourself to be the anti-Hegelian Principle force in your local area. Speak the truth quietly, clearly and unwaveringly and the message will be heard.
ps.
If you email me, i will send you a copy of the report; its real and it exists.
