Scientifically speaking, it's hooey.
The world will end when the sun swells to many times its current size and swallows Earth, Venus, and Mercury (not necessarily in that order).

Sounds like fun! ...uh... Where does the science part come in?
Brian L might be right, but I doubt that will happen by December 21st, 2012, but I wouldn't want to rule out ALL possibilities...
Maybe the sun could implode and become a black hole and rip the earth to subatomic particles before swallowing it all up in a massive gravity well?
Or maybe a giant meteorite could pulverise the planet into shards?
Or maybe aliens could stop by with antimatter demolition technology to pave the way for a new interstellar byway... Is that what's scheduled for December 21st 2012? Not sure how that would be *scientific* number...
Here's an even more interesting possibility: the universe reaches its expiration date and suddenly collapses in upon itself, obliterating everything within...
No matter how you want to imagine it, the end of the world is good fun to dream about! Nothing like apocalyptic enjoyment for everyone!

Isn't that what the ancient Aztecs or Mayans predicted centuries ago? How convient that none of them would ever be alive to see it happen or answer to anyone if they were wrong, as they most certainly are. If the world ends, it will be our own fault. There is almost zero population control and very limited resources. You do the math. I think the earth will be a living hell for several years before it ends for us. As soon as humans die off, I think nature will dominate again over the next thousands of years, if we haven't irrepariably destroyed everything on the earth.

I think it could very well hapeen. All the planets are going to allign on that day, and its prdicted that the equator is going to shift back to where it was thoulsands of years ago, so it wont be at a slant anymore, which is going to cause earthquakes, hurricanes, sunomi's, volcanic eruptions, and all kind of natural disasters. Plus every culture that has ever kept written documents ethier predicted it would end on that day or there calanders just ended, but who knows.......we will have to see

I think I'm booked for that day...can we make it for a later date?
Seriously, if you knew that was the date, would you live your life any differently? Why? Why not live each day as though it was your last? Be kind to those around you; be a person of integrity; help the needy; show compassion to the weak; honor God. Sounds like a good plan for every day to me! That way we aren't left with regrets when the end eventually comes.

December 21, 2012 is just another winter solstice, nothing more to be concerned about?

Look up CERN LHC.
The experiment has been delayed but I think we now have until May June 2008. Enjoy the time we have.
