Yes, it will make a difference. On a regular keyboard, the numbers have to be typed into the numeric keypad (at teh far right). On a laptop, this is often omitted to save space. However, most laptops have a toggle feature that turns part of the keyboard into a fuly functional numeric keypad (usually the right hand side of the keyboard). check your laptop manual for more details.

If all else fails, go to the Start menu, click on Run and type "charmap" (without the quotes). This will bring up the character map, and you can copy and paste most available characters from there.

What application are you in? Word, Wordpad, and Notebook all work for me.

The problem is that you have to use the numeric keypad, not the numbers above your normal letters. (Make sure numlock is not on.)

Your laptop may not have a numeric keypad. If not, usually there is a function key (Fn) that will give you numpad functionality, so you'd have to hold the alt, the function key, and then tap the keys that now correspond to 1,3,0 on the letter keypad.

You can get explicit info on which keys at your manufacturer's website.

If you are using Windows START->ALL PROGRAM->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS->CHARACTER MAP

Then select the required character and the desired font.

The selected characters appear in the text box at the bottom.

Finally click COPY button to copy to clipboard.

Paste it wherever you need it.
