I am a HUGE Metallica fan, but i didn't get into Metallica until a couple years ago. I love all of their albums before Load and ReLoad. Those two albums don't even sound like Metallica back in the early 90's, but I like to listen to them once in a while. I hadn't really listened to St. Anger until I bought it for my Dad for Father's Day. I don't mean to bash on Metallica or anything, but that album was BAD. They're coming out with another album now, and it's going to be released sometime this summer (supposedly). I haven't listened to their two new songs, but do you think it will be like St. Anger, or will they reach back to the late 80's/early 90's and make another spectacular album?

Well the album actually isn't due until Spring next year, but I think it'll be much better than St. Anger. Kirk Hammett recently said that the new songs are a little more like the stuff from their first 5 albums. The guitars are tuned where they used to be, James' singing sounds more like it used to, and Lars' changed his snare drum back. A lot of the music is said to be fast and heavy with guitar solos, but also some groove oriented stuff. Here's what James had to say about the new album...

They have said that they will try to go back to their roots and make the new album sound more like their stuff from the 80's. However for the albums "Kill em All", "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" Cliff Burton, their original bass player was the prominent song writer of the group. Cliff had schooling in classical music that could really be noticed on their first 3 albums. After Cliff died in 1986, the band never really sounded the same. And Justice for All... in 88' was good but much of their creativity on that album was fueled by their emotions over the loss of Cliff. "The Black Album" in 90' was also good, but the band saw much help from producer Bob Rock. Without Cliff, (and Bob) it is unlikely that the band will produce anything as good as the 80's and early 90's, however anything will be better than St. Anger and I know I'll pick up a copy.

"St. Anger" sucked. Period. I have pretty much given up on Metallica. Their first three albums ("Kill 'Em All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets") are classics. "...And Justice For All" proved that Cliff Burton (R.I.P.) didn't possess ALL of the talent and creativity in the band. The Black Album had its moments. After that...crap. Kirk Hammett used to be the best lead guitarist in the business...what happened? Another bass player bailed. They claim they're going back to their roots? Too late. I don't think they know how to rock anymore. Far too many years of phoning in that "corporate metal" crap that a thousand other bands play. Anything from their first five albums is instantly recognizable as Metallica, but after that, they sound like any one of a thousand other bands. Out of respect for their first three albums I'll give the new one a listen but I definitely will not buy it without listening to it first. "St. Anger" cured me of that!

St. Anger was bad. It was like Lars took over and decided his snare was the best thing in the band. You could barely hear anything else. Metallica is my favorite even though after the black album they, well who the hell knows what happened. Hopefully Rick Rubin doesn't try to make this album to mainstream and James and Kirk start to shred again.

Even if Metallica made another album that resembled Ride the Lightning, there's too much water under the bridge, too much blantant commercialism to ever take them seriously again. After AJFA a door closed behind them.

That aside the chance of the new album being a return to their old glories is laughably small judging by everything since AJFA.

It will probably sound like none of those. But im pretty sure it wont suck *** because bob rock is out of the picture. the only reason st. anger sucked is because bob rock helped in the song writting. But it will be some heavy ****.

God I HOPE not!

But regardless, they'll never be as good as they were back in the 80's with Kill Em All, RTL and MOP.
