Yes EUG the Tribe sucks. That explains why they have been in 1st place most of the year and the White Sox have almost fallen past the Royals.

I agree with him on quite a few of them including Ryan. Some of this is borrowed from stuff Stark wrote as well...My sources are two Stark articles on underrated and overrated players with very good explanations as to why he thinks so.
As for Nolan Ryan saying that he is one of the greatest pitcher because he has the most strikeouts and the most no-hitters, which is the only argument I've heard, is like saying that Pete Rose is the greatest hitter because he has the most hits.

7 no-hitters is impressive. In his 773 career starts, 7 games isn't really a lot.

His strikeout total is amazing. But he was a horrible fielder, has the most career walks and led the league in walks 8 times.

He led the league in ERA only twice, never led the league in wins and NEVER WON A CY YOUNG.

He was a very good pitcher and one of the scariest to face and that's why he is overrated.

The only one I see that I definitely have an issue with is Nolan Ryan. Forget the no-hitters, the wins, all the strikeouts. The one number that speaks for itself is this: Nolan Ryan had the lowest hitters' average against in the history of the game. Simply put, he's the hardest pitcher to hit that there has ever been. How can the man with that record be overrated?

No offense, but I think this question is ridiculous. To those who answered: If you don't agree with Jayson Stark, or if you do, read his book. It's a good book, and he provides very good reasoning for every single one of them. Nolan Ryan was amazing some days and awful other days, Sandy Koufax was great at the end of his career, but horrible at the beginning. Etc.
I'm willing to bet that Jayson Stark not only knows more about baseball than anybody who answered the question, but devoted far more time to research than any of you could even contemplate. It's his job. He writes for ESPN, and his columns are primarily about random things that happen, all he does is research.

how can Sandy Koufax be overratted. he wan the triple crown of pitching 3 times and had the season strikeout record. he was also the first player with four no-hitters. he is still second with four. he also won 3 CY youngs when they counted for both leagues. I agree Duke Snider is underrated. also though dave Winfield is not overratted and D.H.s are not real bvaseball players.

The only one that really jumps out at me is overrated catcher -- that should be Sandy Alomar Jr. How this guy built a 20-year career from an NL ROY Award and one genuinely good season (1997) is inexplicable.

Quite a few look good. There does appear to be a slight bias toward the retired players. It is a very interesting question and it has me thinking of compiling my own list. I don't agree with them all, but there are none I would argue against fervently, either.

Don't agree with any of it, throw the book in the trash if you paid less than $5. If you paid more than $5 for the book give it to someone you don't like for Christmas.
