It's amazing, but I entered college as a farily liberal person. Education changed me. I understand Consrvatism is not for everyone, but it is the best choice for me. I believe in being self reliant. With my views where else could I go?

I am Pro Life, I think marriage should be between a man & a woman, I think no american should be taxed by the US government at a rate higher than 33%, I beleive in self reliance and giving to charity not being over taxed and creating a giant Nanny State, I believe the US has no choice but to police the World because if we did not who would?

I don't think our founders were conservatives or liberals. I do know this - no where did our founders advocate the socialist policies found on the left. They detested high taxes. I am sure they would be in favor of americans keeping the majority of the income that they earn. Today's democrat party always raises taxes and never cuts them. Our founders were definatley not democrats!

Sorry, but again, I disagree.

Most of the college graduates I KNOW are far from conservative, and what the HELL does being "liberal" have to do with "self-reliance?"

Another sweeping generalization and slur.

All the Democrats I KNOW have good jobs and make good $$. They're not on the dole. They're pillars of the community; council members, teachers, craftsmen, firemen, policemen.

I am "pro-life," too; I just believe that conservatives have their head....you know where...when it comes our dismal teen pregnancy and abortion rate, and they resist universal access to contraception and comprehensive sex education out of some twisted sense of "family values."

Ya...for God's sake, don't TELL teens about contraception...they might want to have sex.

Penelope...they're going to have sex ANYWAY!

Put the emphasis on the pregnancy and not the sex.

As far as marriage goes, we've been married almost 37 yrs. and if our neighbors are Ted & Fred, that has absolutely no impact or effect on our relationship.

Besides, HALF the hetero marriages end in divorce, anyway. Who are THEY to set the standard for relationships?

Our founders were the greatest combination of conservative and liberal this world has ever seen; far more so than the current House and Congress.

I am sure they would be in favor of Americans minding their own business and "live and let live."

How haughty of you to declare that they were not "Democrats."

Too bad we DON'T have a time machine. I'd love to see our founders' reaction to the current administration with their penchant for secrecy.

And again, where do you get the notion that Republicans never raised taxes?

We're going to be paying high taxes for decades to come because of Iraq.

That's a hard call...

Normally I would say yes, but the way many of the republicans in congress have been acting and voting lately I'm beginning to wonder. But then what are your alternatives? The Democrat party has been usurped by the radical left liberals also known as the green, socialist, and/or communist. The Libertarians are conservative but lack the voter base to get their candidates elected most of the time because of some of their more fringe ideals. Independent probably fits closer now than it has in the past.

With the way both sides have been ignoring their collective voter base maybe the independents will be the middle ground many are looking for.

Personally I have always voted for the individual who holds closest to my beliefs and has the best chance of winning. That has usually been a republican but not always.

Until recently, if you were running as a republican in my county, you didn’t have a chance of getting elected. So I voted for those democrats that were closest to my way of thinking as my small way trying to keep the liberals out of our local government as did most conservatives around here. Now, I’m proud to say, my county is mostly conservative with republicans holding almost all elected offices.

Bottom line… It’s a crap shoot these days as to what you’re going to get from any party. It’s best to look very closely at the people running and vote accordingly.

Conservatism and being a Republican are not necessary the same thing. One is a a thought process/ideology the other is a group. I'm registered as a Republican but feel I'm more of a conservative lately as the group has not been representing my thoughts and beliefs.

As to if it's in your best interest, i believe that it is. It offers the most opportunity for individual success and prosperity. Our country is the most successful in the world because people have the opportunity and incentive to make anything they want out of their life.

Liberalism, which believes in government having a larger control over our lives (welfare programs, regulations, etc) reduces the ability for the citizens to want to be independently successful because they can rely on the government to take care of them.

If you're looking to make your own way and be as successful as you can be, conservatism is the way to go. Just don't believe all Republicans are Conservative or all Democrats are Liberal. Good luck sorting it out!

Maybe not. Why don't you take the worlds smallest political quiz at the libertarian website. The founders put Freedom first, the Democrats and Republicans have freedom way down in their lists. The Democrats want to solve all our social problems by taking what one person earned and giving it to another who didn't. That's stealing in my book. On the other hand the Republicans want to make all the other decisions in your life for you.

I think the Libertarian party has it wrong on fighting terrorist. I think we have to take the battle overseas just to prevent them from having a safe haven from which to launch their attacks on us. Maybe if enough people get into the party we can change that and make the point that freedom is worth fighting for.

As for the Republicans and Democrats neither of those parties is based on any particular principle and they both do whatever is politically expedient. Just like Bush on the "No child left behind" federalization of the public schools, or the program to legalize illegals.

I think, based on your beliefs, that it would be in your best interest to vote Republican.
I am a "middle-of-the-road" kind of guy when it comes to politics, but I definitely lean towards the right, or Republican side.
I agree with your comment about us "policing the world" as well. I don't neccessarily agree with engaging every country in the world, but I think most people don't realize that we mostly do this to actually help people.

I do think the Republican party is looking out for the best interest, and especially now, the safety of the American people. The Democrats love to tax, and seem to put civil liberties for criminals and terrorists before national security.

Neither party is perfect. You just need to choose the one that closely represents the majority of your beliefs.

Why would you want to label yourself as Repub or Dem? Conservative or Liberal? Why not be open minded and vote the issues with your own thought process after researching and assessing all avenues?

Oddly enough I entered college as a fairly conservative person and education changed me. I am also pro-life and even agree with you on most of the other issues. The difference between us is I believe the war in Iraq is unjust and our leaders are getting richer off of the lives of our soldiers. I also believe that those of us who are better off have a responsibility to help those that are worse of. I'm not really a Christian but Jesus knew what he was talking about.

Thomas Jefferson was pretty liberal, aside from that whole troubling slave-owning thing...Do a little more reading of what they actually thought, in their own words, not someone else's interpretation of it.. Ben Franklin was by no means conservative either. Oh, and by the way, those folks actually WROTE the Constitution. They'd be horrified at the cavalier way it's being dismantled by the current administration.

It is not in your best interest to be a Republican, because apparently it encourages you to post the same question over and over.

Is it possible that the Republican party has damaged your long term memory?

Please consider consulting a doctor to make sure nothing is really wrong.
