Bookstore release parties?
People mill around waiting for their turn to buy a book, which different places manage differently, some by giving numbered cards to people as they arrive, some by numbering reservations. some (ugh) by making everybody line up.
At different locations around the store people will be doing children's activities, such as quizzes, face painting, snacks, etc.
If it is a major bookstore, their coffee shop will be selling specialties.
Some people might or might not dress up - for the last book release most people waiting were middle aged and didn't where I was. But this is THE LAST ONE. I hope it is more entertaining and less tedious, but I doubt it.

Well, for the kids there's a costume contest. They usually try selling as much Potter merchandise as they can muster. Then about 15 min to a half an hour before it's released people stand in line and wait and talk and wait and push and shove and then some 13 yr old kid farts clearing a good 10 ft around him and then its about 15 seconds b4 its time to sell em... everyone's giving their minus 10 second countdown... at the end of it I'm the smart alec who screams HAPPY NEW YEAR! Then everyone looks at the cashiers who are standing there with a doe in the headlights look on their faces because their clock shows 3 mins slower than everyone else. The crowd starts getting upset and the last 2 mins are more like 2 years. Finally they sell em and several 10 yr olds are turning to the back to see what happened. This is where ear plugs or the ability to feign deafness comes in handy cuz they begin to ruin the book for all who can hear them...
My suggestion... be at the front of the line, and leave IMMEDIATELY after wards.... :-)
