They're supposed to signify a bad answer, right? It really annoys me when people give a thumbs down for an answer they personally don't agree with, rather than just for an actually bad answer.
Example: I just answered a question, "Do you believe in God?" The two people who said they didn't both got a thumbs down. Now this doesn't make sense. They answered the question truthfully and therefore gave a good answer, right? After all, "Yes" isn't the only possible answer. But they still got a thumbs down each. Now I'm a Christian myself, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to attack a person just for saying THEY don't happen to believe in God. Giving them a thumbs down isn't going to make them say "Gee, maybe I was wrong.. God must exist after all!" More likely, it'll just annoy them and further estrange them from any person who does believe in God, because we'll come across as judgemental and hateful.
This is just one example of misused thumbs down.. anyone else agree with me?

Good grief! Did I say I APPROVED of their disbelief? Far from it. The fact remains, however, that people are free to believe what they wish and my attacking them won't make them any more responsive to witnessing attempts! Would you like to hang out with someone or listen to what they had to say about God (or other subjects) if they were constantly putting you down and belittling your thoughts and beliefs? I sure wouldn't!

LOL! I never said I was in charge of thumbs up/down or any other part of Y!A...
just getting my opinion out there, is all :)
One thing I've noticed is that whenever I make a comment about something I don't like on Y!A people always say things like "You take it way too seriously" "Gosh, it's just the internet" "Get a life, it really doesn't matter"
kinda funny to me :) I mean, it's not like I'm losing sleep over it.

Preach it sister. I was just having an imaginary conversation in my head about the misuse of the thumbs down feature. It does bug a little that people can't just be objective and allow for differing opinions. I like to give thumbs down to people who say things like, "Maybe it's because you're fat and ugly." Now, I just don't see that being a positive or at relevant or helpful answer. But then again... maybe it was because she was fat and ugly... still... Answers is a good idea in theory, but theory doesn't fly when you have dumb people in large groups.

Who died and left you in charge of what thumbs up/thumbs down is supposed to mean?
I agree with some the others, you take this way too seriously.

Yes, I agree. The thumbs down should only be used on answers that are purposefully rude or mean, or answers that you know are proved to be wrong. For example, if someone asked what the largest planet in the solar system was, and someone answered Mars, I would give it a thumbs down, so there is no way it would get best answer, and so people would know it was wrong. It shouldn't be used against people who have different opinions than you do.

I agree with you. Thumbs up. I have to admit, I've been at fault for judging someone based on my opinion and it's wrong. I'll work on that. I believe in God too and he wouldn't want us to judge.

well i think that thumbs up thumbs down is to help out the asker, so the one people agree with more gets more thumbs up, while a less popular answer would have more thumbs down. ultimately though, it would be up to the asker to decide which one he/she likes the best. i dont agree with people who do that, but it doesnt affect whether or not the asker will choose it. (assuming the asker is intelligent and capable of thinking)

I'd give a thumbs down for this question (that you answered yourself) if I could. haha.. but seriously... I think people give thumbs down if they don't agree with your answer. I guess I don't see what the big deal is? It's not like you lose points or anything. Maybe you're taking this just a bit too seriously if you think people are taking it as judgemental and/or hateful.

I try not to give a thumbs down on questions that ask for opinions, unless the answerer is abusive or something. Personally, I try to reserve the thumbs down for bad answers about factual things that I actually know something about.

I agree that thumbs down is misused in every question, but I must say that when it comes to the Lord I would give thumbs down on the negatives in a heartbeat. And yes, I do consider someone saying they do not believe in God as negative and you should too, being a christian. How can you fight in Gods army when your in favor of both sides?
ADDITIONAL: You may as well approve, you act not much different than someone who is afraid to acknowledge Christ out of embarrassment. Your a coward for that. If you want to fight about it then email me.

Actually no. I think you have every right to give a thumbs down to an answer you don't agree with. I don't think a thumb down hurts right?
