I know you don't want to hear this but perhaps you should stay awake and work out what's keeping you awake? I don't know the reason you want to be knocked out but I certainly understand that need! Until you deal with the issue, you may not be able to fall asleep naturally until you do. And you do NOT want to get dependent on sleeping pills.
If you can't do this then here is a suggestion. It REALLY helps me:
Put some lavender oil on your pillow case and wrists.
As you are lying in bed, focus on each part of your body starting with your feet. And ask yourself if they are relaxed.
Work up to your legs and even your butt cheeks. Yes, butt cheeks!
Go all the way up to your face. Are your lips relaxed? Are your eyes relaxed?
While you are doing this, make sure you are taking deep breaths, nice and slow.
Make sure your hands are relaxed and open, not clenched in a fist. Make sure your not clenching your teeth. All the while taking nice deep breaths.
If you are still awake, just lie there in a relaxed state and breath deeply.
This always puts me out and keeps me that way for the whole night. Whenever I do it, I'm always amazed at the tension spots I find and wasn't aware of.
I really hope this helps. Sleeping pills are okay now and then but no good for escaping something your body is telling you to address.

Don't bother!!! First be VERY wary of ANY sleeping pill. They are so addictive that if they are taken 3, yes THREE, nights in a row, that withdrawal and ADDITIONAL sleep difficulty can be demonstrated on the forth night if they are then not taken. Almost no GPs seem to be aware of the available evidence demonstrating this!

Do not read, exercise or watch TV for at least 30 minutes before retiring as these are all brain stimulants. Take a warm, caffeine free drink. Also try aromatherapy quality lavender oil either on the pillow, or in a warm bath before retiring.

It depends on WHY you can't sleep. Does your mind race? Do you just lay there for hours? Do you fall asleep and wake up a few hours later? There's a different answer for each.
Believe it or not, most difficult sleep issues are best taken care of by some form of anti-depressant versus a standard sleeping pill.

Bleach. Did you say you wanted to wake up again???

Sorry seriously on prescription now you might like to go for Temazepam, however some painkillers can be much better than sleeping tablets - anything from D1F18's upwards (Diahydracodine). If you are a very lucky girl - you might get your hands on some Barbituates - if so Phenobarbitone will work a treat although very rarely prescribed nowadays

Clonidine. It isnt actually a sleeping pill. It is a relaxant that slows down your heart rate and eventually you get so tired you go to sleep. It has to be prescribed.
