Very interesting discussions from www.catholicchurchnh.org. I am glad to see what REAL Catholics think about our right for marriage. What is your opinion? The post is long but it's worth it...

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and "Committee on Marriage and Family Life" - discussing gay marriage. By the old definition of the Catholic Church marriage between two men or women is not recognized, however committee is stating “Marriage is a fundamental social structure based on human nature, then neither the church nor the state can change it at the core. Marriage, and the family it produces, is a society that precedes all other societies. It’s an institution we don’t own, but one rather that we receive. This does not mean that church and state can’t regulate marriage, for example, placing minimum age limits or restrictions based on kinship, but it does mean we are not free to alter the basic structure of marriage that arises from sexual complementarity and that leads to a conjugal union which serves mutual love and the transmission of new life.”

It's a long-winded rant that presents no new arguments, with no new logical basis, in favor of limiting marriage to one man and one woman. The entire article can be summarized as: "1. That's the way it's always been, therefore, that's the way it's supposed to be. 2. Marriage is about procreation, and gay people can't have kids on their own, so their marriage would not be legitimate." Everything else is just fluff, fluff, and more fluff- as though logic is to be weighed by the pound, rather than by relevance and ability to support the conclusion.

The real-world facts are that there are many ancient "traditions" that have been discarded as civilization has progressed- like allowing women to decide who they want to marry, initiate a divorce, and press charges for spousal abuse. The "marriage is about procreation" argument completely ignores the fact that millions of kids are being raised by gay couples now, and if we value life and families, they deserve every bit as much support and protection as any other kids- particularly when, in this instance, it would take absolutely nothing away from those in "traditional" marriages to do so.

kena2 is EXACTLY right. The 2 points are EXACTLY what the article states. The Catholic church is, and will always be, behind the times and opposed to change in any form. As I like to say, the church has only recently (IN THE 21st CENTURY) came out to say that the INQUISITION was wrong!!!

Who cares if someone gets married by the pope, or shares their devotion to each other naked standing in front of a tree in an old growth forest? It's up to the couple themselves to define what their marriage should be.

It's not the job of the government to define what individuals marriage should be, or regulate it in any manor. The gvmt should not sanction one marriage over the other, nor give special perks to marriages it sees as better than others.

There is no reason why the gvmt has to be involved in marriage at all. This is our job as individuals to decide.

Get the gvmt OUT of the marriage biz!

Interesting article. But I have to keep asking why to all these religious institutions spend so mush time on gay issues? Why not the homeless, poverty and issues that actually effect a positive change in the world?

It's about time the Church's catches up with the rest of society, they are usually 30 years behind what society already knows. (Gays have been saying this for decades).
