- mrs. frisby and the rats of nimh - a pageturner about smart rats that made me think that rats just 'might' be able to think like us. hope you can find it!
- the hobbit (if you haven't already read it)
- harriet the spy
- a wrinkle in time
- the stars by HA Rey. it's a nonfiction book about how to make sense of stars so you can identify constellations.
maybe also take a pen and paper and write your own :)
where are you going? maybe it's a good story

You have some great suggestions already!
If you like science fiction at all, try Scott Westerfeld's trilogy - Uglies, Pretties and Specials. At 16 you have an operation and go from an Ugly to a Pretty, but life isn't as grand as it seems.
Fantasy, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is good. That's where the Golden Compass book comes from. The main character is a 12 year old girl (I think she's 12) named Lyra.
Action, maybe Anthony Horowitz's Alex Ride series. The main character is a 14 year old boy who starts to spy for Britain's MI6. Crazy situations he gets into and crazy ways he gets out.
Maximum Ride, by James Patterson, is a fast read (which might not be good for your plane ride). Fantasy - main characters are 98% human and 2% bird. I've only read the first so far.
The Giver is a good book (Lois Lowry); there are two others in this series: Gathering Blue and messenger.
Meg Cabot is probably a good bet as well. Lots of books. And I recently finally read Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (only the first) and enjoyed that quite a bit - this is Anne Brasheres (sp?).
If you like fantasy, another couple of authors you might try are Anne McCaffrey and the Dragonriders of Pern and Piers Anthony's Xanth series. The Xanth series is full of puns and a lot of fun. Have a wonderful trip!

If they haven't already read them, any of the Harry Potter books. But starting at the beginning is the best way to go with those.
WHen I was that age, I liked the Xanth books by Piers Anthony. They are about a magical world that has a very literal side to it. Lots of puns. A butter fly is a small bug that delivers buckets of butter. A night mare is a horse that carries bad dreams. You get the idea. I found them VERY entertaining.
ALso David Eddings has some really good ones out there. The Belgariad is a 4 or 5 book series about a boy who ends up saving the world. Typical good vs evil, *why me* kind of stuff. I read it in college, but would have enjoyed it much earlier. It's comparable to Harry Potter for me.

I read the first Harry Potter book on a plane when I was 12..it was new then, haha! It kept my interest.
Try books by Madeline l'Engle (Wrinkle in Time, The Giver). Those were always favorites of mine.
Also, The Face on the Milk Carton series is interesting! I cannot remember the author, but it is a pretty adult book made for 12 year olds.

You didn't mention whether ur 12 yr. old was a girl or a boy. So I have to agree with a lot of the other submitters that the Harry Potter series is a good bet. But if ur child is a girl allow me to suggest the book Fifteen by Beverly Cleary. It is a little old school, but I read it as a child and I just loved it. Another old school collection is anything by Barbra Cartland. It might be a little grown up for a 12 yr. old, but at least all her heroines remained virgins until after they were married to our hero.

The Harry Potter Series or anything from Judy Blume. Also take some audio books so she can listen when her eyes get tired.
