Most of the people in nursing homes today were teenagers or young adults during the big band and swing era ( after WW II single vocalists became more popular) . Here is a list of some of the popular artists during those times:(approximately between 1935 - 1950)

Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Boswell Sisters, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Fred Astaire, Guy Lombardo, Sammy Kaye, Artie Shaw, Kay Kyser( a man, not a woman), Glen Miller, Ink Spots, Vaughn Monroe, Woody Herman, Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Mills Brothers, Louis Jordan, Ella Fitzgerald, Les Brown, Freddy Martin, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Ray Noble, Frankie Laine, Ames Brothers, Patti Page., Teresa Brewer. Dinah Shore.

There are hundreds of songs by these artists. I suggest going to "All Music Guide: to find out the most well known songs by these performers.. The site has pretty complete discographies
