During a holiday in Barbados, four years ago, I enjoyed watching Brian Lara bat, for the West Indies, against Sri Lanka. Even against the great spin bowler, Murilitheran, Lara stood out from the rest. His batting was so smooth and effortless - he made it look easy.
I was surprised to see how short and unimposing he is, physically, but as a batsman, he is a giant. The crowd gave him an amazing welcome and cheered his every move. He was the only player on the day to score a century and he did it with such skill and style. Sri Lanka won the match, but Lara was the best player on the field and it was a privilege to see such a talented batsman in action.

I cannot say, that there IS such a thing, as a "BEST" batsman! Allow me, to explain!
Whilst I understand your liking of the skills of BARRY RICHARDS, - there are batsmen, from different eras, who were JUST as good, - if, not BETTER, in some ways! But, - let us not forget, the BOWLERS, too! Again, that comment, will require some explanation!
For example, - I remember, VIVIDLY that, - whilst on HOLIDAY, in South Wales, as a youngster, - (I was four or five days short of my FIFTH birthday, at the time, and, even, at THAT age, LOVED watching cricket), - my father and I went to watch the day's play, between Nottinghamshire, (where I LIVE), and Glamorgan!
During that day, I had the privilege, of watching a "MOMENT OF HISTORY", as Notts all-rounder GARFIELD SOBERS, smashed all SIX balls, of ONE OVER, for "SIXES"!
There have been several OTHER players, whom I have admired, since, - such, as greats, like Sir VIVIAN RICHARDS, Sir RICHARD HADLEE, - and, my all-time personal favourite, - "GUY THE GORILLA", himself, - the legendary SIR IAN TERENCE BOTHAM! That is NOT to belittle, - in ANY WAY, - the wondrous skills, of Botham's one-time County colleague, - and fellow KNIGHT, - the West Indian legend, that is the tremendous Sir ISAAC VIVIAN ALEXANDER RICHARDS!
Then, - as time passed, I became an "ARDENT" fan, of SPIN BOWLING, and, - for ME, - there are TWO spinners, whose skills, set them "HEAD AND SHOULDERS" above all OTHERS.
Those two gentlemen, are, former Kent and England OFF-SPINNER, DEREK LESLIE UNDERWOOD, - and, - even BETTER, - the beguiling Australian legend, that WAS, - that IS, - and, that WILL ALWAYS BE, - the great SHANE KEITH WARNE!
And, - of COURSE, - TODAY, - cricket fans are mesmerised, by the BOWLING skills of MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN!
I have, only, NOT seen ONE of the above catalogue of players, - MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN, - personally, - but, I LIVE in the HOPE of doing so!
