The number of double reads by a scanner at a checkout line has a rate of 3 per hour.

Identify the appropriate probability distribution and its parameter.

What is the probability that there will be at least one double read in the next hour?

What is the probability of no double read in the next 30 minutes?

What are the mean and variance of the number of double reads in a 24 hour day?

this is a poisson distribution because it deals with average rates over a fixed time: use this as a reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poisson_distribution

To save yourself time use the Excel Poisson function
=Poisson()

1) λ= 3
2) 1- P( zero + one )
1- [=POISSON(1,3,TRUE)] = .80
3) =POISSON(0,1.5,TRUE) = 0.22313016
4) in a day=24*3 = 72
the variance is the mean so 3
