There must exist the mens rea, actus reus, and concurrence of both the mens rea and actus reus.
Mens rea is the requisite mental state of the crime. Under the model penal code, the mens rea for crimes can be purposely, knowingly, recklessly, or negligently. Under the common law, the mens rea could include specific intent, general intent, and malice. Note that there are also strict liability crimes where no mental state is necessary.
Actus reus is a volitional act. Thus, if someone committed the act while unconscious, asleep, or involuntarily (some exceptions apply), it would not be a volitional act.
Under the common law, there must also be a concurrence of the mens rea and actus reus. Thus, the intent must exist at the time the individual undertakes the actus reus.

We live in a culture that embraces the criminal element. This society glorifies rap music and videos that demean and dehumanize women, endorse violence and fill our neighborhoods with hate.As a black man,I see it everyday.Drug dealers are considered role models.Going to prison has become the "in" thing to do.We send more children to jail than we do to college.
