Unfortunately, there is no way to save you time on this one - because that is one of the main things you are going to need.

That being said, the only way to do it will be to cut the grass down to a manageable length first. This can be done using a weed-whacker or a scythe. Once the grass is at a manageable length, rake and then mow the lawn with a lawnmower. Depending where you live, watch out for snakes as they LOVE long grass.

As suggested by more than one: Rent a mower designed to cut that size grass, or use a scythe and do it by hand before sacrificing your mower to the tough tall grass. Be sure to remove all the cuttings before you take your lawnmower in there.

And I don't recommend using a weedeater. They were designed to cut lawn grasses and small weeds, not five-foot haycrop. You'll do as much damage to your weedeater as you will your mower.

You can tilt the lawnmower so that it is at a 45 degree angle to the grass, and slowly let it chew its way through the patch, letting the mower down a little at a time until the grass is almost cut and then let the mower down to the ground. And each time you progress to a new patch, start with the mower at a tilt again. Takes a while, but the mower does not choke.

I assume we're talking about a big lawn? The tall grass will wrap around the spindle of the mower blade and then cause the mtor to stop and you won't be able to re-start.

I would rent a brush hog.

Either sling it down by hand or rent a bushhog if it's quite thick and/or there is a lot of area to cover. Otherwise you'll definitely risk doing damage to your mower as they just weren't designed to cut grass taller than they are.
