Cranberries are a source of polyphenol antioxidants, phytochemicals under active research for possible benefits to the cardiovascular system, immune system and as anti-cancer agents.
There is potential benefit of cranberry juice consumption against bacterial infections in the urinary system. While much of the evidence is equivocal, hypotheses suggest that an effect occurs from a component of the juice competitively inhibiting bacterial attachment to the bladder and urethra, allowing the bacteria to be flushed out more easily.
Although promising for anti-bacterial activity, long-term consumption of cranberry juice has only limited evidence for beneficial effects against urinary tract infections in women. Similar applications have not been successfully proved in other clinical trials of consuming cranberry juice or tablets by people with spinal cord injury associated with bladder catheterization, neurogenic bladder or infrequent urination, any of which may be associated with increased susceptibility to bacterial infections.
Also, by cosuming lemonade you also keep from receiving the cystals that causes kidney stones.

It helps to wash out the infection by keeping the germs from sticking to the inside of your bladder. You have to drink 100% pure cranberry juice (not sugar added) in order for it to actually work. If you don't like the taste of drinking pure cranberries; then try the capsules. And also make sure your drinking plenty of water to help flush out your kidneys and bladder as well. If after a couple of day there is no improvement, or if the problem gets worst; then go see your doctor.

Yes, but it must be real cranberry juice. Most stuff in the stores in mostly apple juice or high fructose corn syrup.
It's believed to work because a molecule called Mannose seems to disrupt the formation of bacterial biofilms and prevents the bacteria for "sticking" to the tissues inside the walls of the bladder. This allows your immune system to have a bigger impact fighting off the infection.

Quality cranberry juice produces hippuric acid in the urine which acidifies the urine and prevents bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. If pure cranberry juice is not available, cranberry capsules can be substituted. They can be found in most health food stores. Always take these with a large glass of water.

Daily consumption of cranberry, either in juice - organic, unsweetened cranberry - or capsule form, dramatically reduces the recurrence of UTIs.
Cranberry is not a substitute for antibiotics during an acute urinary tract infection (UTI). See your doctor if you don't feel better after 24 to 36 hours of using cranberry for a suspected UTI.
See your doctor right away if symptoms include fever, chills, back pain, or blood in the urine, which may be signs of a kidney infection (upper UTI) requiring medical attention.

Yes,but you'll have to drink a lot of it.I use cranberry in capsule form.Cranberries and blueberries help prevent E-coli from attaching to your bladder. It is one of the most common causes of UTI's.Uva Ursi is also well known for preventing bladder infections.I believe further research is being done on this herb. These 2 herbs are probably the most recommended when it comes to bladder and UTI infections.
