Is it safe or dangerous for a woman to live alone in her apartment in a safe city?(a college student can walk several blocks from the college dorms to her apartment in the middle of the night without getting abducted or raped)

How can it be dangerous? How to make it safer?

Stop watching so much TV - I am 32 and have lived by myself in LA since I was 23. I have NEVER had an incident where burglars or rapists came to my door. Yes, it happens, but it's not common...it's more media hype than anything. You have to use common sense. Make sure you get an apartment that has a driveway or a parking lot where you can park your car rather than street parking (though I did this for a number of years, and never had a problem). Don't talk on your cell phone from your car to the front door so you're aware of the sounds of what's going on around you. Lock your doors, get renters insurance, get to know your neighbors, participate in a neighborhood watch, have a landline with phones in various rooms, etc. You're better off with a roommate simply because: a) rent will be much cheaper than renting an apartment on your own and b) burglars generally want to go into a house when no one is home, and the more people that live in the house, the more likely it is that someone will be home.

You have to realize that it's dangerous for women whether you live alone or with a roommate.
To make things safer: listen to your gut and pay attention to your surroundings. Don't become predictable with your schedule, meaning don't come home and leave your house at the same time everyday. Take a self defense class. And don't fool yourself into thinking that carrying a weapon will make you safe. What if it gets turned around on you? Your best weapon is your mind and your body. Also, try to buddy up with a neighbor. Try to find someone who lives alone like you and befriend them. You can house-sit for one another when needed. In short, stay alert!
Edit: One more thing. God forbid should you ever get attacked, scream FIRE!!! Unfortunately, witnesses will get involved more readily if there's a threat of their property being damaged as opposed to someone being attacked.

It all depends where you live. I have never felt threatened, personally, whether I lived in a big city or small town. Except in Chicago. That was a bit shaky for me. Many people have told me I was foolish.

But in this day and age, things have been happening. Women get abducted, raped, etc.
I suggest carrying a can of mace, and a very piercing whistle, such as the ones they use in sports games, around your neck, so you can whistle whenever someone threatens you.
And a cell phone. I have heard of girls saving their lives by being able to call or text someone for help.
Be alert, and don't dawdle. Go straight from one destination to another.

Keep your doors and windows locked.

I think it'd be safer to be with a guy in dangerous situations or walking alone in the dark ect. The guy can usually fight off the other person if someone were to do something not that girls can't be tough too. but personally i would feel safer with a guy while going somewhere or if im freaked out.

it can be dangerous because as you know people may take advantage and try to mug, kidnap, rape you but If the city is as you say safe then its ok,however dont always rely on it being a safe city that you would never be a victim of a crime, its always safe to have a companion going home or having a good relationship with your neighbors,in that way they would notice if something happened to you.=)

Sweetie, if I've learned one thing in my 44 years of living, it's that as a single woman you should NEVER walk anywhere alone. And why would you be walking in the middle of the night? There is strength in numbers!! And carry MACE

it's safe if that woman is aware of her surroundings and lives smart. things like locking your doors when you come in and keeping your windows locked when you sleep. Also walking in well lit areas or taking a cab if you feel unsafe. Walking in groups of two or more often helps. Carrying mase or a taser in your hand will help in an attack. Consider taking a self defense class.

True like the person said on top. It depends where you live. But it is possible dangerous because you don't know out there are some people who would do something terrible.

Just protect yourself with mace or something, Take a class for self defense and you wont have to worry. Oh and if you see a guy that look,s coming at you.. Scream!! You'll do fine in the city. Good Luck.

I've lived alone for a few years and with the proper precautions it's safe. Be aware of your surroundings, carry mace or another form of self defense and don't let your guard down.
