I'm pregnant and would like to purchase one. Is it safe to get a fetal heart monitor and use it at home? I saw one and I wanted to buy it but the nurse at the clinic said they might not be safe for the baby? Anyone has one and used it? what do you think?

Yes, I rented 1 from bellybeats.com and absolutely loved it! I had some early bleeding up until about 16 weeks and it saved my sanity! I sent it back once i could feel the baby move a whole lot. I definitely recommend one and they are safe!
Very Best Wishes!

Yeah, I rented a fetal heart doppler from Belly Beats, it's $25 a month. Yeah, it's safe, although we don't do it everyday because it is disturbing the babies environment by sending waves into your uterus. We love it! We never got a chance to hear the babies heart beat at the doc. We got to hear it for about 2 seconds when I was in the ER. My husband and I got one a week ago (I'm 19 weeks), and we love to hear our baby's heart beat (especially since I am still not feeling many kicks yet). We will probably return it when the baby kicks consistently. Anyway, I recommend it!

*Oh yeah, my husband and I bought a stethoscope to hear the baby's heart beat, was fun to try and explore but no heartbeat whatsoever, we would try with the fetal heart doppler then put the stethoscope right where we found the beat, nothing. I would recommend a stethoscope later in pregnancy.

My sister actually bought one for me and it never worked. It did when I hit 30 weeks but by then the baby is moving daily and there's no reason for it really. To be honest I've only used it twice since I was able to catch the heartbeat. They aren't hard to use.. it's just very easy to pick up different things like your own heartbeat, the flow from the placenta sounds like a heartbeat.. I would suggest not getting one..

I don't think "safe" is anything to worry about. Besides if it wasn't safe then why would a clinic or doc use one.
I personally bought the least expensive one at Walmart and it worked fine for me.
Congrats & Good Luck!

I rented one for a month with baby #2 when I was bleeding with a subchorionic hematoma and needed daily reassurance. I would rent-check for a local birth/baby store or ask your Ob if he knows of anyone who does rentals.

I think they are perfectly safe, but again, check with the OB.

You can hear the heartbeat with a stethoscope. I know my husband could when I was pregnant. You won't have to worry about safety with a stethoscope and it is cheaper too.

Check the reviews of those things on amazon.com, epinions.com, etc. The consensus is that they're just junk.

I'm not sure how on earth it would 'not be safe,' though.

I think they are safe to use but I read the reviews and it says they dont really work good.
